Ok footy over! Wow Sarah! Not only is Frances the right age but so is Beatrice. Relationship to head of household? But evidently families were big & sprawling then. Doncaster to Lancashire is a trek though - especially as Frances married in Doncaster and brought up her family there. But interesting all the same & I obviously need to dig deeper into the branches to solve this one as I can't see an obvious link. It would seem that Ruth's family originate in Wakefield which is at least on the way to Lancs though! Will go and find the image myself now. Thank you. |

Hi Bridie I think I may have found Frances on the 1901 census Going by what you said about her cousin/aunt being Beatrice and the fact that she was brought up with relatives. This is the ONLY Frances I can find witht the correct birth date, even though she is listed as being a 'male', see what U think. 32 Cotton Street Burnley Jmaes Dunken H M 40 coal miner hewer b. 1891 census would seem to confirm everything: (mistranscribed as Caines) View Record Caines, Beatrice abt 1889 Doncaster, Yorkshire, England Daughter Doncaster Yorkshire View Record Caines, Emma A abt 1846 Cockwood, Yorkshire, England Wife Doncaster Yorkshire View Record Caines, John abt 1846 Cockwood, Yorkshire, England Head Doncaster Yorkshire View Record Caines, Joseph abt 1884 Doncaster, Yorkshire, England Daughter Doncaster Yorkshire View Record Caines, Kate abt 1883 Doncaster, Yorkshire, England Daughter Doncaster Yorkshire View Record Caines, Lilly S abt 1875 Doncaster, Yorkshire, England Daughter Doncaster Yorkshire View Record Caines, Ruth J abt 1873 Doncaster, Yorkshire, England Daughter Doncaster Yorkshire View Record Caines, William abt 1869 Doncaster, Yorkshire, England Son Doncaster York Beatrice is a younger daughter in the same family which fits with her being Frances' aunt. Thanks to everyone for their input - I think this one is in the bag! Can't believe the number of hours I've spent looking for this family and after posting my problem on here it was all unravelled in a few short hours. |

Thank you David, June, Sarah & Val. I'm now pretty sure Ruth Jane Cairns who died 1894 is the one I want - I will order her death certificate to see if it proves any theories. Hopefully somebody really useful will have registered her death or it will give a home address that matches Frances' birth address! In speaking to my elderly aunt she thinks her gran (Ruth) probably did die in childbirth as her mum (Frances) had an unhappy childhood brought up by relatives. She also confirmed Beatrice married Arthur Kirton. So, having digested the above info. we can stop looking for Ruth Cairns on the 1901 census (as she died in 1894) but I still need to find Frances b.1893. Off to watch Donny Rovers v. Arsenal now - will check in later! |

Those also look to be of interest. Just turning up the notes I made on my last visit to the rellie. She has Beatrice marrying ? Kirton. I have just found a marriage Dep quarter 1912, Doncaster, vol 9c p1626 of Beatrice Cairns to Kirton but no forename! Anyone fill that one in? In the meantime I'm off to bed - work & school run still to do in the morning! Will update this thread tomorrow night. Thanks to all for your interest & input - much appreciated. ' night! |

Yes June, that 1881 census image would fit with area and the Ruth J Cairns already mentioned. Will have to try and quiz rellie tomorrow to see if anything mentioned here will jog her memory! |

The honest answer is that I really don't know! The Ruth J Cairns at 58 South Street looks promising - even though she's just plain Ruth on her daughter's birth certificate. I will have to quiz my husband's aunt about it being her death in 1894. She seems to think Frances had a sister/aunt (she favoured aunt) Beatrice and on freeBMD there is a birth for a Beatrice Cairns in Doncaster a few years before Frances. Thanks everyone for looking! |

Fresh pair of eyes required. Frances Amelia Cairns b. 1893 at home address of 5 South Street, Doncaster. Mother - Ruth Cairns - no occupation No father named on birth certificate but believe father was ? Fox. Have looked at 1891 census and 1901 census for no. 5 South Street, Doncaster but the family isn't living there. This side of the family still lives in the same area - are they just missing off the census? Know nothing at all about Ruth Cairns so any leads would be appreciated! |
