I am trying to establish the date of death of a John Hawman in Guisborough, Yorkshire. He was on the 1881 census living Mill Street but by the 1891 census, his 'wife' Martha had supposedly married a William Denton and supposedly living, Stranghow, Skelton, Yorkshire. I do not have details of this 1891 entry. Anyone able to help with details/verification of this death and marriage? I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Gen, it could welll be. Looking at the reference 9d 276 4 1884. Does the '4' refer to 4th qtr. It isn't the age at death is it? Sorry to be so thick.

Gen and Zoe Thank you both for trying for me. This flippin' Martha has been driving me mad for years. She's more elusive than the Scarlet Pimpernel. She was actually born Whitby in 1858 and her maiden name was Stephenson. I am given to believe that she married at least twice. I did think it was to a John Hawman first time and a William Denton the second time, but I have no proof of this. If she did marry a John Hawman then they had a daughter Florence and son John. I'm beginning to think I will never get to the bottom of this woman's comings and gooings !!

Margaret get someone to check out the 1891 census and post the results I would but have no access. It makes sense she was Married to John he died she married someone Called John Woodthorpe he died shortly after then she remarried William Denton you need to find out if her children are still with her do a new post asking for a 1891 look up for Martha Denton b1858 Whitby and then we will try to find children if they are not with her Zoe

Zoe and Gen You little detectives you.... well done. As far as the 1901 census goes, if we are on the right track and she did in fact marry William Denton (as a third husband !!) then they are living in Annitsford, Northumberland by then - no details I'm afraid.
