Please can anyone find Ralph Sedgwick born c1816 in Bland/Sedbergh, Yorkshire. In 1851, he's with his parents and in 1871, he's in a home as a pauper.

Hi Georgina, thanks for that. Unfortunately, that one isn't him as he's also in 1851 with his family. Mine isn't married in 1851.

Tracy There is a Thomas Sedgwick on the 1861, born around 1793 in Nether Bland, Yorkshire, and living in Sedbergh. Is he related, do you know? Suzy

I was about to say his father, but he's not. He might be a cousin or uncle or something. I'm not sure.

Hi - I've just done searches on the 1861 using all the combinations I could think of - using just the first name with birth year, first name with keywords of 'Inmate/pauper/brother/lodger/lunatic/idiot' etc - the only one that came close was a Ralph Harper b1817 Yorks - living in the Union Workhouse and listed as 'idiot' and 'dumb'. Could he possibly have been put in there after his parents died and perhaps they didn't know his proper name? We know from the 1851 census that he was listed as 'lunatic', which is probably why he was still unmarried and living at home with parents. (Although 'lunatic' back then had different meaning to nowadays). Do you know if he had any siblings? Are they on the 1841 census at all? If he wasn't in a workhouse or hospital asylum then he may have been lodging with family until they sorted something out for him. Just a few thoughts... Leah

I know I keep saying this; but have you looked for him in Scotland? Suzy

Leah, thanks - he had a load of siblings, but I started with him (how stupid, eh? lol) I just found his brother, Joseph. He was born in 1818 and is on all the censuses up to 1901! All the others (7 of them) were girls, so that's gonna take a while to track them down. I haven't tried Scotland yet - mainly cos I haven't any credits lol Just checked, but there weren't any matches.

Hello again - ok, that helps a bit. If you can give us all his siblings names and birth years we can then try tracing their marriages, find them on the 1861 census (hopefully!) and then we'll see if Ralph is with any of them. If he was staying with a married sister, it could be that his surname has been dittoed in as her married surname. It's worth a try, I think. Leah forget all of that - have just read the message above from someone else (after I posted this) and I feel sure that R S in the lunatic asylum is your man.

Georgina, I think whoever sibmitted the John and Mary stuff got the wrong father. Mary's maiden name is Airey, which is where I am related. Another good example of where the IGI is incorrect lol

Just a thought Tracy, but I have just been helping Isobel look for someone supposedly b 1815/16 ........... and on the 1851 she is done as 56 instead of 36 ....... so if you haven't found Ralph yet, ( RS reference above ? ) should we be looking for someone with possible definate wrong age do you think ? ....... just another thought. Elaine ;-)
