I am trying to trace my father - Andrew James Cole, born around 1947. My real name is Alison Judith Cole and I was born in 1967. I tried to buy the marriage certificate that will have his date of birth on but I need to have his date of birth to get it! I don't know the date of the marriage. I know my mothers date of birth and her name and place of birth but I only know my fathers name - any ideas would be much appreciated, I am new to this.

it wont- what it will tell you is how old he said he was at the time - and the two arent always the same! do you know where or about when the marriage took place? do you know your mothers maiden name -presumably you do

Me thinks you will need to trawl through the pay to view websites to glean this information. 1837 on line or family relatives. With the latter you can put his name in and the spouses name and it will pull up all the possibles. Jo

Hi Lisa, First of all are both of your parents still alive that you know of? Secondly do you know your mother to speak to? Laurie

Did your father and mother marry each other? Or did they each marry other people? Reg

Family relatives may be your best bet. Am I repeating myself here? Jo

thanks for all your replies, my mother is alive but my father is such a family taboo that I can't discuss it with her. she did marry him, I have his surname and he is named as my father on my birth certificate. I can't get the Salvation Army to help until I find his date of birth, am I stuck? I think he was married to her in Plymouth in 1967 or late 1966.

Lisa What was your mother's maiden surname? Don't put her first name............. Reg

Liza, The best you can hope for, is that his 'age' is on the Marriage cert. His Date of Birth as such WON'T be.... and it won't tell you WHERE he was born either. It WILL however, give HIS Fathers name and occupation. If he was over 21, then it MIGHT say 'of age'.... or give the age that he said he was at that time ! Certificates are £7 IF you order online using the reference numbers found on the Indexes. Let us know that you are back with us ... and I will see what help I can give you. Elaine ;-)

So have I Reg ........ but I don't think it will help her. I've found 3 possible births for her Father as well. Ive sent her a PM asking her to acknowledge this thread and to get in touch via PM if she wants the information. Elaine ;-)

Wow, I am so excited! thank you all so much for your help. On my birth certificate it gives his full name and his occupation as being a painter and decorator, which probably meant he didn't have a profession to speak of but did odd jobs, or maybe I just think the worst of him :-) I'll be online again tomorrow night at about 8 ish. My mums maiden name was Sammut

Got it! He was aged 20 so he was born in 1946 or 1947, his dad was called Arthur Sidney Cole Think I might have found him - have contacted a cousin on here and all the names add up! Yes I have found him, am waiting for an address so I can write to him. I don't want a load of new relatives I just want to satisfy my curiosity. Thank you so much everyone for all your help, I was going round in circles before I posted on here to ask for advice. I'll let you know what he is like if I meet him - and if he is a millionaiire I will remember you all :-)
