Errrm .... yep, ... bit of a puzzler ! OK, lets presume that a) Mum WAS named Jacqueline Harmer at birth b) she WAS born in Sept 1942 1 ... Check Sept and Dec qtr's 1942 ..... and also check March, June and Sept 1943 as well.... for a Jacqueline. Chances are, that BECAUSE her Grandma brought her up, she was registered VERY late. I see from a previous reply ... that a Mary G was registered with MMN Harmer .... this could be the actual registration of the birth .... and everyone called her Jacqueline ... I do know from experience that you don't have to register a name change. I've personally had my surname changed 3 times since 1977 ... and never once done officially, so I know it can be done. I also had a passport in two of the names. However, I have never tried to get married, so what the rules are about identification when you aply to get married either now or back in 1975 etc I can't actually give advise on I'm afraid. Susan, If your Mum is available, can you ask her ehat identification she needed (and if required) when she applied to get married ? Elaine ;-)

Susan - just had a thought after reading through this thread...what if your gran's daughter, Beryl, had a love child, named her Beryl on her birth cert, but then your gran decided (for whatever reason) that she would bring up the baby as her own and then changed the baby name from Beryl to Jacqueline in order for it not to look odd having two daughters with same name? I know it's a long shot but stranger things have happened... ...or am I totally muddled up with all these names LOL

Jess Bow Bag Report 16 Jan 2006 10:56

Susan

Susan Report 16 Jan 2006 10:54

This is what I cant understand. this is the name she grew up with and it is on her marriage certificate. Do you think I should call the gro and let them do a search? The strange thing is Beryl was her 'sisters' name. I think that my gt Grandma christened her this and later changed it

Susan, Check YOUR birth entry on 1837online ... this will give you your Mum's MAIDEN surname. This is the surname your Mum had at birth. Then you can check for your mum's birth entry under THAT surname.
