Just rec'd a marriage cert . 18th Sept 1870. James Ralph 49 Widower Spinner (address) Higher Fold. Father Peter Ralph (Mechanic). Not sure on the womans name. It looks like it gives her 2 names. Ann Haworth and Helena Nuttall. aged 38 Spinster occup Weaver same address as James Ralph. Father George Nuttall occup Mason. Why would it give her 2 names?? Thanks for any help Marie

Under the Name and Surname on marriage cert it looks like this Ann Haworth alias?? } Nuttall Helena Not sure on the alias bit, hard to read. If she was married before should it not say widow or something other than Spinster?

On the page on Ancestry for the Setember Qtr Ann Haworth Nuttal So she is possibly called Ann Haworth Helena Nuttal and the reg district is Haslingdon Maureen

Thanks for that will try and find her in 1851 and 1861.

Hi there is one way to find out How old was she when married.... find them married for Birthplace and look at the relevant census to see if she is under Haworth or Nuttal the nearest to her being born Maureen

Just looked on the marriages on Ancestry Maureen and found Ann Haworth Nuttall. Theres also a Helena Nuttall further down. Same page and vol no.

The age of James is wrong for the 1871 census, he would have been born around 1821 if he was 49 when he married. Irene

She was 38 when she married in 1870 so gives year of birth 1832c.

Hi Irene I think the age has just been read wrong on the 1871. Its a bit hard to read.

So her name was Ann Haworth Nuttall but she was also known as Helena. Well, it's nice of them to tell you because now if you find a mystery Helena on censuses or children's birth certs. etc. at least you will know it's her! Kate.
