Mo, I have just got dizzy looking for either Elizabeth on 1851 but zilch, thought I had the younger once, right age, wrong family. He must have been a fast worker if he buried one in June and then married another in August, not an impossibility though. Gloria---getting dizzier by the minute |

Gloria I have just been looking at Free Bmd and a Joseph Shotton and Elizabeth Burn were married in the March qtr of 1850 This has got me so puzzled....because even if she had died in Childbirth the child Elizabeth would still have shown up in the household with Joseph or a Joseph and Elizabeth would have shown up on the 1851 Census Any Ideas... I am starting to run out... Mo |

Hi Gloria I have thought about that too in getting her birth cert... but I am 70%sure that it is his first child and not hers.... the line actually follows Mary Ann Lairds son Joseph and I am on trying to piece together this early info..just for records sake and basically to try and tie in this loose end... If I can help it I dont want to get her birth cert.. but it might just have to come to that.. Mo |

Just a thought, but could the Elizabeth be her daughter and not his, would be interesting to get her birth cert !!!! Just looked at the image for 1861 and it looks as though the transcriber was writing something else and then put daug over it. Gloria |

Gloria I have that one earmarked as being the right man... That is exactly as to what has me puzzled There is defo a child Eliz in the household in 1861.. I know there is a chance of the marriage taken place just after the census and the child being born early lol But I also have the marriage cert for the Laird Wilson mariage and that gives the father's name as John I think I am going to need the 1841 Northumberland to confirm the father..... is John to the head of the house called Mary Hrmmm also the grandson Thomas is born in the right place as to where the families were later on... I have this family on the 1861 and 1871 Census and I have been trying to locate the family on the 1851 but so far the family are being elusive Married in 1855 but doesn't account for the Child Elizabeth born in 1851 making me think he has been married before On the 1861 Census. Joseph and Mary Jane were living at 17 Burnhope, Durham. Joseph Shotton, head, married, aged 30, Occ. Coalminer, born Ponteland, Durham. Mary Jane Shotton, wife, married, aged 28, born Bishopwearmouth, Durham. Elizabeth, dau, aged 10, born ?, Northumberland. George, son, aged 4, born Bishop Auckland, Durham. John, son, aged 2, born North Shields, Northumberland. Joseph, son, aged 3 Months, born Sunnybrow, Durham. On the 1871 Census. Joseph and Mary Ann were living at Inkermanns Cottages, Wolsingham, Durham. Joseph Shotton, head, married, aged 41, Occ. Coalminer, born Callerton, Durham. Mary Ann Shotton, wife, married, aged 39, born Sunderland, Durham. George, son, aged 16, Occ. Coalminer, born Newfield, Durham. John, son, aged 14, Occ. Coalminer, born ? Northumberland. Joseph, son, aged 10, scholar, born Sunnybrow, Durham. Hannah, dau, aged 6, scholar, born Shield Row, Durham. Mary Hannah, aged 1 Month, born Tow Law, Durham. I am trying to get my head around the family after this census in 1876 he marries a woman called Martha Gardiner and I have the entries for them also I think he has also been married pre Mary Ann Laird nee Wilson to a possible Elizabeth Burn?? Making 3 marriages in total.. On all the census he gives his Birthplace as Callerton, Northumberland Mo |
