If your relative couldn't read or write (as many couldn't long ago) then vicars or enumerators would write her surname how THEY thought it should be spelt. I'm afraid it means looking for all variations but this isn't usually hard on FREE BMD because you can do a phoenetic search on the surname . Cheers, Horatia

Try a wild card search instead. So you'd put Wil*t That will catch all double and single Ts and Ls.

Give us some approx ages, places etc. and we'll see if we can help. Got a spare half hour until Johnny Depp film comes on and then I'm afraid my attention will be on him!

Search each variation of of the surname separately if that makes it easer. Leave the first name in but just change the surname. There is also an overlooked section on FREE BMD where you can search between certain years - this cuts results down. If you know the registration district for sure then just put that registration district in and search on that. People don't customise their searches and that's why too many results come up. If someone was born in say 1858 then they normally get married twenty years later. But some people marry from about the age of sixteen so put in a search of a marriage from when they were about 16+ until the age of 32 to start with. Cheers, Horatia

Are you trying to find out the name of Ada's first husband? If that is the case, the birth cert of any of their children will have that info. The best one to look for would be the one whose year of birth you know........... Reg

Maybe this will help ... Wilmot Elizabeth (Atkin) West Derby.8b 1044 Birth March qtr 1914 Were the other children younger or older than Elizabeth ? I'd have said she spelt it WILMOT ... as that is how the children are registered........ Elizabeths Birth cert will give you BOTH parents names ... I am searching for the parents marriage ...... can't find (too many results) There are only 2 Eileen Wilmots born between 1900 and 1920: 1 Wilmot Eileen (Wallace) Chesterfield.7b 1385 Birth 3 1915 2 Wilmot Eileen Gertrude Nottingham.7b 441 Birth 2 1900 Can't find this number 2 on the 1901 census ??? Only one result for Peggy Wilmot .... MMN is different again ...! Wilmot Peggy (Woolgar) Croydon.2a 469 Birth 4 1914 Can't be related .... tooo close to Elizabeth's registration. Is Peggy's actual name NOT Peggy ? (Just seen - Peggy is a MILLER) Trying this from a different angle.... All Wilmot births Sept 1911 - Dec 1920, with MMN Atkin .. 1 Wilmot Alice M (Atkin) West Derby.8b 1035 Birth March 1916 2 Wilmot Elizabeth (Atkin) West Derby.8b 1044 Birth March 1914 3 Wilmot Ernest H (Atkin) West Derby.8b 1050 Birth June 1912
