I'm looking for Betty Burton, but I don't know if Betty is short for anything. She was born in West Ham, or East London somewhere. Her parents names were Arthur Sidney Burton and Florence Dawes. Betty is my nan's sister. She must have been born between 1928 and 1932, because their mother died when my nan was eight (1932) from a back street abortion. Any help appreciated. I'm going to bed now but if you don't delete the thread I will check tomorrow. Thankyou. Beth

Her birth, whether as Betty or Elizabeth or anything else, will be in the GRO birth indexes, images are free to search on Ancestry at the moment. As she was born after 1911 her mother's maiden name will be in the index too, which will help you find her record. nell

Bethany Search through the Images FREE on ancestry, its tedious work but it has to be done and slowly or you will miss what your looking for, rewarding too when its found. /www.ancestry(.)co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx Best of luck Carrie:)

I've looked through 1928, 1929 and 1930, and the only birth of a Burton with mother's maiden name Dawes is this one:- William A. Burton, mother's maiden name Dawes March qtr. 1928, W.Ham, 4a, 267 As it's the right district, could possibly be a brother. Sorry, I have to go to bed now, but you can start at 1931 for your search. I'd suggest that you go through the indexes again, just looking for any births registered against 'Burton' with a mother's maiden name of 'Dawes'. Given the 'window' that you've got, it shouldn't take too long, and might turn up her registration under a different first name than you were expecting. Also, there's the possibility that the parents weren't married, so you'll need to go through the same period of indexes looking for her under 'Dawes' with a mother's maiden name of 'Dawes'.

Thank you. So do you think this is her then? Mabel E. Burton, Sep 1931, W.Ham, Vol 4a, Page 264. Mothers maiden name, Dawes

Thanks Kath, I'm thinking Elizabeth is the middle name.........I have an Aunty Betty who is Dorothy Elizabeth........

I would think so. You could always order the certificate and give Elizabeth as a middle name as a checking point. Kath. x

Hi Bethany, Possibly is her but the only way to know if it's the same parents is to send for the birth certificate giving Parents names as a checking point.
