Graham Report 17 Feb 2006 00:59

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what happened to Robinson TOYNE after his marriage to Martha Guilert in 1860. In the 1881 census Martha is listed as widowed, but I haven't been able to find Robinson's death registered any where. Would she be classed as widowed in them days, if they were divorced ? They lived around the Goole/Thorne area if this is of any help Cheers Graham

Unless they were stinking rich and virtually aristocracy, I think it extremely remote that they would be divorced. However, it is perfectly possible that they split up and even that Robinson went through a bigamous marriage with someone else, or at least lived with someone described as a wife on censuses etc. Have you tried searching by first name and birthplace only or by second name and birthplace only? Virtually all my family have been mistranscribed at some time or other. nell

When you say you havent' found Robinson's death anywhere, have you been through every single quarter of every single year between 1871 and 1881? Or is he missing in 1871 too? nell

Yes, your correct with the STRINGWELL family. This is the Martha, I'm trying to sort out. and I've done the checks mentioned in the ealier message, but I'm still stumped. In the 1871 census Martha is listed as BOUSE with Richard (STRINDELL) & Eaden TOYNE Cheers Graham

Just to say that my g-g-grandmother describes herself as a widow on the 1891 census, even though her husband is living a few doors away, describing himself as married (without a wife)! Kate.
