Blimey babe !!! I'll just re do it ! Challenge 1 - how to find marriage cert for a William Wright (millions of those about I know) bn 1878 Dover to a Gertrude Lodder bn 1888 Wellingborough then moved to B'ham area. They could have married anywhere but I presume? it would be in her parish of Aston, Birmingham. I have searched the igi and Ancestry to find Gertrude with no rellies on the igi and no marriage on Anc. I have searched for William Wright on the Ancestry BMD to find at least 20 up to 1910 for either Dover and B'ham areas and nothing thereafter. I know they married some date between 1901 (as census states william living with parents still at this point) and 1916 which is when my Grandfather Ralph was born in Dover. Challenge 2 - How to find my mothers half brother who may not even know of our existence. John Parker bn1927 around the south London area was known as 'Nobby' and lied to get into the Navy. He served on the Ark Royal when she sank in 1939ish off gibralter. Post 1939 you have to be next of kin (which I'm not) to get the naval records. I have searched the Commonwealth war graves, put adverts on HMS Ark Royals homepage, adverts on Navy News. He could be married, dead and anywhere in the country - with or without a family. I'm beginning to realise how nice it is to have an unusual surname now - if I know my luck though, I'll find a Smith too!? Unlike some I just want to know the right questions/places to ask/go to get the info I need. signed a green newbie xx ------------------------------------- Having read through the first challenge: Try FreeBMD, putting BOTH name's in. Use the last know date whilst single as the start date as the search and just search a 10 year period to start with. FreeBMD only goes upto about 1911. http://freebmd.rootsweb(.)com/cgi/search.pl ..remove () After 1911 upto 1920 you could use FamilyRelatives - but thats a Payable site .... I have credit with that site, so if they didn't marry before 1911 I'll check upto 1920 for you. I'll read your 2nd challenge ! I have to admit, I can't really advice you on this one, as I don't know how to ! The only thing I can suggest is that you ask for a lookup on the 2003/4 or 5 Electoral Register and HOPE that something jumps out for you. I really think you should throw Challenge 2 over to all members !!! I don't mind admitting defeat with this particular question ! The first one won't beat us ... if they definately married, one of us will find them ! Elaine ;-)
