Linda in those days not many people could read or write so would just guess ages and name spellings. Georgina. |

Thank you all so much for your help. I've got so many Richards in my tree that I get into a muddle anyway! However, this is definitely the right family. I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and assume he's from West Worlington! Linda |

Definitely senior moment - copied it down correctly from image to my notebook - and then somehow read it as Richard as I was typing it up!! May have had something to do with the fact that was talking to hubby at the same time and his name is -- yes -- Richard !!! |

According to his death cert he died 4th Feb 1842 in Chulmleigh aged 41 Thanks for that Elaine -- I'm VERY relieved it's John, I've spent ages on this tiny bit of the family, they've done everything to stop metracing them! Linda |

panic over! The entry for the family is split over 2 pages. Last entry on Page 14: John Edworthy 40 Ag lab Next page First entry page 15 Susan 37 Mary 9 William 7 John 5 Richard 3 James 7 months ( I think Elaine has done a transcription error) the entry above John has the first name Richard. |

Linda, The stated age of 40 in the 1841 census actually represents any age 40 - 44. Exact ages are used upto 14. 15 represents any age 15 - 19. However you will find some examples where enumerators ignored the instructions and (helpfully) provided exact ages. It was not until the 1851 census that exact ages were used. Pete |

Erk! I have just realised that the Head of household is Richard, not John... this family is crawling with both names, but John is the one who died 12 months later and the father of Richard (aged 3)... I have Richard's baptism record. Sometimes I hate this family! Linda |

Thanks Elaine, that's great! That's them... trouble is , his age ties with his death cert, but not the baptism record for 1798 - I'm still none the wiser! I can't think how else I can prove where he's from and the area is crawling with Edworthys! Linda |

Hello I need the missing link. Can anyone find the following people in the 1841 census please? John Edworthy (b 1798-1801) Susan/Susanna/Susannah Edworthy (b 1803-1805 Winkleigh) Their children may or maynot havve been at home: George (c1828 Winkleigh) Mary (c1830 Chulmleigh) William (c1833 Chulmleigh) John (c1835 Chulmleigh) Richard (c1837 Chulmleigh) James (c1841 Chulmleigh) It's John in particular I need, ideally to prove a place of birth. However any of the rest will help too! Thanks for anything you can find. Linda x |
