Can anyone help with this. Eli George Carey b. 17 April 1857, Bedminster. Father, Charles Carey, mother : Elisabeth, formerly Johns. After that I can find no trace of either his father or mother. In 1861 I found Eli George living with his aunt Eleanor Bushell in Nettleton, Wilts. After that I can't find any trace of him either but he wasn't dead as he turns up again as witness to his cousin’s marriage on Dec 25th 1879, then he disappears again. There is an Eli George Carey on the 1891 census in Silvertown, Essex but this is a nephew. As a matter of interest I can't find any of this family on the 1901 either. Anyone have any ideas what they were up to? Carole

Oops, sorry, gave you a bit of a runaround - was in fact 1881 I meant  that is the correct family, Elaine

Elaine

Elaine Report 5 Mar 2006 12:37

but the Eli G Carey in 1881 is aged 3 or 5 (image not clear) - therefore doesn´t match up with the one you are looking for.

Another lead could be Joseph Cary, also living in Nettleton in 1861. He is down as grandson of Charles and Elisabeth Carey. He is possibly a brother of Eli George the elder, if not a - a cousin. There seems to be a Welsh lead too. A little confusing - Eli's father and grandfather were called Charles Carey and his mother and grandmother both Elisabeth. Carole

No but the father, Thomas is the brother of Eleanor Bushell. Can you see any trace of this family after 1881?

Elaine

Elaine Report 5 Mar 2006 12:50

sorry lost here - are you saying that Thomas Carey b 1848 was the brother of Eleanor Bushell ??

Elaine

Elaine Report 5 Mar 2006 13:02

Presume this is the marriage of his parents - and the Welsh connection Carey, Charles Record Type: Marriages Quarter: March Year: 1854 District: Swansea County: Glamorgan West Glamorgan Volume: 11a Page: 580 Carey, Charles 1854 March Marriages Swansea Glamorgan West Glamorgan John, Elizabeth 1854 March Marriages Swansea Glamorgan West Glamorgan

Yes, although I haven't actually got the certs to prove Thomas' link to the others - just the reoccurence of the name Eli George and the birthplace - Portishead. Eleanor and Charles (father and son) + their other siblings were born in Portishead. Thomas and Eleanor and Charles(2) were the children of Charles Carey and Elisabeth Brooks. All these Careys were from Portishead. Charles (2) married Elisabeth John and fathered Eli George (1) and possibly Joseph. Thomas m Mary? and hence the Silvertown Careys, inlcusind Eli George (2) Oh dear, it is confusing I know. Thanks for your help Elaine. I hope that makes it a bit clearer.

Thanks for the marriage details. It does look like Joseph Cary on the 1861 census in Nettleton could be their son then - born in Swansea. Also with him is Thomas (aged 12) - the family relationship is right too.
