I am sorry that I dont have too much info to go on but I am searching for information regarding two witnesses on my Grandparents Marriage Cert. J.Gray and Florrie Gray. I am wondering if anyone can search for a Marriage for the above two names. Florrie,s maiden name maybe Davies? Florence Davies. I think Florence maybe my Grandfathers sister dob or birth place I am unsure of. My Grandfather was born in 1888 Middlesex London and married in the year 1909 at Poplar. I am still working on the where abouts in London the family came from. Sorry I cant offer any more info. Many Thanks. Regards Marion |

Georgina Thank you for your help. My Grandfathers name was Thomas Henry Davies and my Great Grandfathers name was Richard. My Great Grandmothers name I am not sure of as I am still searching and have been for a while now. I know my Grandfather had a brother named George born about 1891? I believe my Grandfather was born in London,s East End but his Father Richard was born in England but very near to Wales according to my old Aunt. Georgeina I thought by finding out if Florence was my Grandfathers sister it might help me with my search for the Davies Family. Until now I have found one Thomas Henry Davies in Greenwich Skiiers Rd and another in North Woolwich but this Davies gave the Head as Thomas and not Richard. |

Hello Marion You say your Grandfather was born in 1888; you obviously don't have his birth certificate because you don't know his Mother's name - where did you get the 1888 and Middlesex info from? Suzy |

Marion I am afraid without more info you are looking for a needle in a haystack there are so many Davies's. On the 1881 census there are no Richard Davies in England who are colliers and in Wales there are only a handful but you cant cross reference them because Thomas wasn't born until 1888. Richard's occupation could be down as coal miner on the census & there are over 100 of them. Georgina. |

Hello Suzy and thank you for joining in. My Mother and her siblings were all born in Londons East End. My Mother was born in Tidal Basin. According to my old Aunt who is aged 92 years and lives in a old folks home in Florida my Grandfather was born near Canning Town or there abouts. My brother who also lives overseas and is aged 65 years also told me Granddad to him spoke with an East London Accent. I dont have my Grandfathers Birth Cert or his Mothers name. I have sent emails off to various companies left messages on old school boards for east London emailed Unilever as my Grandfather worked for John Knights in Silver Town but no one has bothered to reply. As I live in Australia I cant do any hands on work myself. All I can do is email people and send letters off. My Grandmother came from North Woolwich if thats any help. Dont suppose it is. I thought if I could varify if Florence was my Grandfathers sister it may help me with the searching. Marion |

Marion As you don't have any precise dates, I have listed all the Thomas Davies' born in London between 1884 and 1892. Davies Thomas Edward Camberwell.1d 949 Birth 4 1892 Davies Thomas Burt Camberwell.1d 914 Birth 3 1891 Davies Thomas Joseph Chelsea.1a 402 Birth 2 1891 Davies Thomas Holborn.1b 783 Birth 1 1892 Davies Thomas George Kensington.1a 127 Birth 3 1890 Davies Thomas Llewellyn Lambeth.1d 421 Birth 3 1892 Davies Thomas Evan Lambeth.1d 415 Birth 1 1890 Davies Thomas John Lambeth.1d 414 Birth 1 1890 Davies Thomas Henry Lambeth.1d 364 Birth 3 1892 Davies Thomas John Mile End Old Town.1c 504 Birth 3 1891 Davies Thomas James Paddington.1a 47 Birth 4 1890 Davies Thomas Harold Pancras.1b 15 Birth 1 1891 Davies Thomas Llewellyn Pancras.1b 77 Birth 4 1888 Davies Thomas Pancras.1b 96 Birth 4 1888 Davies Thomas George Poplar.1c 682 Birth 4 1887 Davies Thomas Charles Shoreditch.1c 60 Birth 2 1890 Davies Thomas Edward St Olave Bermondsey.1d 317 Birth 1 1886 Davies Thomas John St Saviour Southwark.1d 90 Birth 4 1892 Davies Thomas Alfred St Saviour Southwark.1d 63 Birth 4 1889 Davies Thomas Joseph St Saviour Southwark.1d 46 Birth 1 1889 Davies Thomas William St Saviour Southwark.1d 154 Birth 1 1888 Davies Thomas Henry Stepney.1c 455 Birth 2 1891 Davies Thomas Frances Stepney.1c 430 Birth 2 1890 Davies Thomas Archibald Stepney.1c 416 Birth 3 1889 Davies Thomas Edward Stepney.1c 404 Birth 4 1886 Davies Thomas Henry Woolwich.1d 1242 Birth 1 1887 Don't assume that he was given the middle name on his birth record, although there are a couple with 'Henry'. Now, I am not sure what registration district Canning Town would come under (someone else will) but I would suggest that Mile End, Poplar and Shoreditch would be the closest. Unless you can narrow down dates or places, you may have to order a few birth certificates, and pray!! At least you know his father's name, which you can use as a checking point when ordering. That way, you spend only £4 on each 'guess' . I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - it obviously means a lot to you. Suzy |

Thankyou Suzy. I kind of think it would be the Woolwich one but there again I suppose I would like it to be. I remember my Grandfather and his softly spoken voice. He died when I was about 5 years of age in 1959/60. He would tell me the most lovliest stories and make them all so very real for me. I am now aged 51 but I can see his face so very clearly. My Grandparents lived in North Woolwich and every Sunday my Mother would take me to visit them both. I can only live in hope that one day I can give my Grandfather some family members on my Tree. Thank you very much for trying to help me. Regards Marion Australia |

Marion With relatively common names like Davies and Gray [and I do have Gray and Matthews and Williams and Cooper and Evans and Smiths in my tree, so I know the problems] its very difficult to progress without getting any certificates. You can search for births, marriages and deaths free on ancestry*co.uk [replace * with . I think you need to register, but it is free. Choose the England & Wales beta index] There is a list of registration districts in London, including the East End here: www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/lnd.htm Once you have found some certs you can order them online here: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ You can use checking points if you find several likely certs, so you can specify the father's name or some other reference. Good luck. Nell |
