Hallo again, Now looking for the marriage of William Matthews b. c.1831 in either Hurst Sussex or Huntingdon Surrey (two different places on two different censuses). Wife was Rhoda born c. 1833 Petworth Sussex. Thank you. Sylvia

Hi Sylvia, On the IGI found a William Matthews and a Rhoda Dean married in Brighton 1846. I know the year isn't right ,and if their birth dates are correct, they would have been too young, but thought I would let you know about this one. Any help. Regards Vera

I have a very strong feeling that his first wife was Nancy ?? and then remarried the second time to Rhoda. How do we find his marriage to Nancy ? You are such a help! Thank you very much. Sylvia

Hi again, This all started because I'm looking for the roots of my greatgrandfather John Matthews!! 1881 Census has him born in Hampshire, aged 35 with wife Elizabeth (nee West). Then in 1891 Census he is born in Brede in Sussex aged 36 and in 1901 aged 45 born in Worthing. As I live in East Sussex now I know that all the Sussex places are very near each other. But then I have a lead on a William Matthews born c.1823 in Huntspierpoint Sussex married to Rhoda; 1881 Census has him living in Hampshire. On marriage certificate to Elizabeth West he is aged 24, father William Matthews, horse dealer. HELP! Sylvia

Mmm you're right - the Nancy marriage doesn't quite fit. There is a John Matthews born 1855 on the 1871 census but living with Thomas Matthews and wife Eliza Matthews, says he was born in Keymer Sussex. He named first daughter Elizabeth and second Rhoda (my grandmother). Perhaps he was staying with his uncle Thomas at the time of the census?? Thanks again for your help so far. Sylvia
