Yes, Avril was offering lookups, if she was able to visit, and I did add my request to her thread, but she was obviously too busy. I now how events can overtake you and alter your plans. Chris |

Wow, I've been struggling with this since 1st April, with little headway. Suddenly overnight and whilst I've been at work today the replies have doubled from 8 (inc 4 of mine!) to 16! Please accept a combined response to the many helpful points raised. The details of the church are from the FFHS website. (http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/database/index.shtml) Pay per view, but used carefully, worth every penny. Thanks for the tip about Greenhill. I assumed it meant Derby, but now feel Derby must be the county description. Is Greenhill a village, or the name of the chapel? I did try the Record Office, but 'Record Office staff can only undertake searches on your behalf under the terms of our fee-paid search service.' I also tried the registrar's office (being an eternal optimist) but would need to buy the certificate. When my bank balance increases to match my genealogical aspirations there are dozens, if not hundreds of certs I'd like to buy / must have!! In the meantime I'm grateful to the generous souls who give their time so freely. I am not a scrounger - I do my best to help with Suffolk enquiries whenever I am able to. Thanks for all the interest and suggestions, Chris (of the female variety, by the way!) |

Going by the Church it may be unlikely the register would be held by Derbyshire Archives. Perhaps you could e-mail and check first also for a small charge perhaps smaller than £7.00 they could copy the record for you. PS You must be clever to know the church without the cert! |

Susannah RANSON, born 11 Mar 1854 in Bury St Edmunds, was my Gt grandfather's sister. For years I have searched to find what became of her after December 1871, when she witnessed her brother's wedding. The only Susannah RANSON event I have been able to find that fits the known facts, is the marriage at Derby Greenhill United Presbyterian Church to Walter SMITH. This also fits with later census entries, etc. 1881 census: Bury St Edmunds St Mary, 3 Mayne Water Lane Walter SMITH Head M 25 Bury S Eds Joiner Susannah SMITH Wife M 27 Bury S Eds Harry SMITH Son 3 Derby, England Alice SMITH Daur 1 Bury S Eds This gives the link with Bury and Derbyshire. Another daughter, Lilly, was born in 1884. Susannah died in 1887. In 1891 Walter lived in Cambridgeshire. I am 99% certain that this must be my Susannah, but info from the marriage entry would just be the proof (or otherwise!) that I need. Chris |

How have you got back to Walter Smith and Suzanne Ranson please ? Have you got a child of theirs on a later census ? Have you got Walter and Suzanne on a later census ? if so, which one and where are they ? What year was Walter Smith born please / occupation etc ... Elaine ;-) |

Thank you very much for all your time and trouble. The Susannah in Bury St Edmunds is my relative. I have all census entries to 1871, and details of her death and burial, plus 1881 census, if it IS my Susannah that married Walter Smith. But before I jump to conclusions, I am seeking confirmation that the marriage to Walter Smith is the right one - to do that I would like a check on father's name. Thank you again for all your efforts, Chris |

Chris Have you not got any census details, that can track her back with? age, birth area or childrens names to help track her. Was she born in Bury St Edmunds, Sufflok? there was one Susannah Ranson c1854 that may fit her details and possibly married a Walter Smith, of course only a MC can absolutely confirm her fathers details.
