Thats Ok - I know its all very confusing and it took ages to find all this. I was hoping if I found JS's death it might give me a more definite year of birth so that I could try and get to his parents. The most likely being (at the moment) Stephen Sewell. |

I have managed to gain a fair bit of info on the Joyces and some on the Whitneys. John Eve married Lucy. Its just the Sewells. Joseph Whitney is my great grandfather he took the Sewell surname between 1881 and 1891 i think. On his marriage cert it states his name as Sewell and his Father as Joseph Sewell ag lab. I have been in contact with someone who is also descended from Jemima Whitney and they say that it was common practice for the couples not to marry and that in turn causes a lot of confusion with names. Mary ann was the daughter of Jemima whitney and William Joyce who also did not marry. |

Karen, The Whitney children are not Joseph's. As I have said above, the image clearly says they are Son (of servant) etc and are listed after Mary Whitney the servant. The 'in law' is a transcription error. Unless of course you have evidence that proves otherwise. The Joseph I found in 1881 is an unmarried Ag lab, as are all the rest, so I think it is likely to be him. Liz |

Not sure about that - I think it would depend on when they were married? |

Im back The 1881that i think could be him is the one with Esther Beard. the only discrepancy I have is that it says he was born in Pleshey not High easter although they are close to each other. Joseph was not married to Mary Ann Whitney although the children are his ( I am led to believe that not getting married was common practice in Lofty Green, High Easter). MaryAnn died in 1872 so he could have moved on and taken another 'servant' |

Btw, on the 1871 image, all those 'in-laws' actually say 'of servant' - they are the servant's children. Joseph is unmarried. Liz |
