My George was married by 1881 and living in St Mary - Gloucester with his wife Martha and his 2 sons George and Edwin. He was born about the same time as the George you have listed but I cannot find him on 1837 either, I think his mother was called Sarah Preece - Kings Caple - Hereford. b. 1837. This is as much info as I have on him. Pat

There is an 8 year old Geoge O. Preece living with his family at Alms Houses which are recorded just after the workhouse on the 1861 census. Kath. x

Thankyou all I have looked on Ancestry and found the 1861 workhouse records, but he is not on them. I think I will have to give up on him now, I have been looking for him for the last 2 yearsand I can't find anything on him before 1881. Many thanks all. Pat

I think Elaine is just getting us 'in' to the workhouse, so that we may search.

Sorry - probably didn´t explain myself properly. Patricia was asking for the census image of the workhouse - I just happened to find someone who was in the workhouse at the time - and was trying to say that if she looked that person up - and then scrolled through the image pages - she might find the person she was looking for.

Elaine can I ask how you know her name is Frances Wright? Have I missed something here. Georgina.

Elaine

Elaine Report 11 Apr 2006 09:59

If you put the following into the 1861 search you will find she was in the Union Workhouse Ross - Frances Wright abt 1844 St Weonards, Herefordshire, England Pauper Ross Herefordshire You can then scroll backwards and forwards on the image census. For future reference - in the 1861 search box on Ancestry just put the place name (Ross) and the word pauper in the relationship box. You usually find the inmates of the workhouse were listed as paupers

Pat do you know his mothers name? Georgina.

Patricia

Patricia Report 11 Apr 2006 09:50

Hi Georgina, I think he was born illegitamately and I can't find him anywhere else before 1881 census which puts him from Ross, Hereford. So this is along shot, but worth a try. Pat
