Might be worth getting hold of Alfred's too - that way would know who Mary's father was, just in case children are staying with her parents!

Think I will get hold of that cert. Thanks again for all your help, off for a large glass of something alcoholic after all that brain work!!

I would go with that. Alf's year of birth changes somewhat over the census years. Might be worth asking for a parish look-up for Shepperton, to see if he was christened, or if Sarah did marry Charles Froude, but, like you, I doubt it. Wonder what it says on the marriage cert. (to George Groom)

So.......just checking, can we presume that 1851 Alfred H Groom, is Alfred Hyde (Groom) it's not another one is it???? , you'll have to catch up with the books at the weekend! (Also bet Sarah Hyde never married Alfred's father Charles Froud.)

Christine

Christine Report 21 Apr 2006 20:11

OK then, but this is sooo much more fun! (Still doesn't explain where Alfred was in 1861 though!)

Bingo! George Benjamin Groom 1840 Oct-Nov-Dec Staines Middlesex Sarah Hyde 1840 Oct-Nov-Dec Staines Middlesex Name: George Benjamin Groom Year of Registration: 1840 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Staines County: Middlesex Volume: 3 Page: 271 Sarah married George Groom - he's Alfred's stepfather. Hence the Hyde boys staying with grandparents in 1861 etc.

Jenny Report 21 Apr 2006 19:55

Only 2nd marriage but..............just to maybe add to the confusuin: Alfred married again later as in 1871 census. He has an older daughter living with him who could not possibly be wife number 2's. Daughter is Emma Hyde, have her birth cert...father Alfred Froud Hyde. Alfred's 2nd marraige shows his father as Charles Froud. On IGI is a marriage Alfred Fronde Hyde to Mary Plumbridge 1851.

Christine

Christine Report 21 Apr 2006 19:54

IGI has this for Alfred's marriage, nothing that I can see for his birth as a Hyde (or Groom) ALFRED FRONDE HYDE Male Marriages: Spouse: MARY PLUMBRIDGE Marriage: 28 SEP 1851 Walton On Thames, Surrey, England Ancestry: Name: Alfred Oriude Hyde Year of Registration: 1851 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Chertsey County: Surrey Volume: 4 Page: 70 (think this should be 90 - faded on image) On image on ancestry for Mary Plumbridge, page is 90

Fllippin' computer keeps crashing - ever since I downloaded latest security update from Windows!! Books now thrown out window, while trying to sort this lot out!! 1841 census shows George Groom as carpenter, Sarah a dressmaker Have you managed to find Alfred's marriage? The cert would have his father's name.

Jenny

The fact that Sarah Groom is born in Shepperton, as is Alfred Hyde (snr) is interesting. Could his mother have remarried george Groom. Going to look at 1851.

Jenny

Jenny Report 21 Apr 2006 18:53

Alfred senior married Mary Plumridge, how would the 'Grooms' be grandparents of their children ????? Now I am really confused as that cerainly looks like the Hyde boys.Jenny

Christine
