Is anyone planning a trip to the Somerset RO anytime soon? I am hoping for a look up for the death of Thomas Edwards in the Langport district 1861-1871. I have checked 1837 online, BMD fiche at FHS, freebmd and ancestry .com but it's not there. I am hoping it will appear on the RO's copy of the indexes. I'd do the lookup myself but I live in Australia. Many thanks, Lynda

I have looked on the National Burial index discs, there are only females recorded at All saints Langport, I did a general search the whole county and it came up with these names, but as I don't know Somerset at all, I have no idea if they are in the district you are loking at, 17 Jan 1864 Thomas EDWARDS 74 Somerset Batheaston, St John the Baptist 29 Nov 1869 Thomas EDWARDS 25 Somerset Backwell, St Andrew 3 Dec 1870 Thomas EDWARDS 24 Somerset Clutton, St Augustine of Hippo 26 Nov 1870 Thomas EDWARDS 63 Somerset Curry Mallet, All Saints 23 Feb 1861 Thomas Henry EDWARDS inf Somerset Combe St Nicholas, St Nicholas Feb 1864 Tom Henry EDWARDS 1+ Somerset Combe St Nicholas, St Nicholas Linda

Carol and Jim, thanks for helping. My Thomas lived in Somerton. I have the death cert dated 1870, it's for a man from Curry Mallet (from memory!) . In the 1861 census Thomas called himself BRAIN which was his fathers name. I heard the RO indexes are sometimes slightly different from those at the GRO, do you know if this is true? Lynda

Hi, You won't find the deaths index in the record office, you need the register office for that but they will not allow you to search. Try looking for his burial which will give you a closer date then ask the register office for a search. Gwynne

Hi Lynda, have you managed to solve the problem yet with regards to Thomas Edwards? The reason I ask is that Thomas Edwards of Curry Mallet is a very distant great, great, etc grandfather of mine. Is this one of the same person?

Regards

Rachel Edwards (Somerset)
