Would anyone be kind enough to check the 1861 or 1871 census please for Birmingham. I'm looking for Hephzibah Chessell born 1856 Chorlton/Gorton Lancashire. I've found her on 1881,1891 & 1901 census when she was married to Samuel Whittaker. I have a name on the 1861 census as Hephsibah Chassels aged 9 in Birmingham. Surely there can't be many Hephzibah's, it's such an unusual name. The age should only be 5 & not 9. She doesn't appear on the census in Lancashire. Thanks Sue

There are several coincidences between the 1871 and 1861 details 1871 43 Wellington St Alexander is an engine fitter and is shown as Widower Elizabeth is a callico weaver ?? Alexander born 1828 Nottinghamshire 1861 and the same date of birth and county for John and similar occupation John born 1828 Nottinghamshire Perhaps I am clutching at straws with this. Maureen

Hi Paul, Yes the 1851 looks good. Think I am going to rule out the 1871 family that I posted because of this marriage Name: Alexander Chessell Year of Registration: 1849 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Manchester (1837-1924) County: Lancashire Volume: 20 Page: 656 **Margaret Bentley, Charles Ellis, Eliza Gregory, Mary Hill, James Plowman, Charles Scrivner Will check this thread later. Thank you to you all for all the info on Hephzabah (Hephsibah, Ephseba). I'm even more confused & am unsure which family is hers! I think the only real way to find out is to buy her birth certificate which will show me her Fathers name & Mothers maiden name. On the 1881, 1891 & 1901 census details I have, she was married to Samuel Whittaker & her name was spelt Hephzabah, Hephzibah & Hephzibak!!!!!!!! Her dob was always correct as being born 1856 in Gorton. She was a cotton weaver. They always seemed to live in the same area. I'm thinking maybe John has the correct family. You'd think with a name like 'Hephzebah' it wouldn't be so difficult. They were so illiterate though that they seemed to spell all their names different at every census date maybe it depended on the numerator & how he fancied spelling the name!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again, Very much appreciated Susan

Hi Vera, I went onto 1837 site for the 1861 census & put up Hephzibah chessell with name varients on both names. I didn't put any age in or any district etc. There was only one that came up with the different spellings & she was aged 9 & not born in Gorton. I don't think it is the correct person. The other leads were more promising. I'll send for the birth certificate I think. Thanks for your help Susan
