Hi Paul I too have seen William Charles Whittingham in Aylesford. This is on 1837 the reference is V 42G or V427, I have scan if you wish to look your eyes may be better than mine? Not possible to cross reference with just Christian name, need surname? You could order this certificate on line GRO and put in Christian name or just unkown for wife or ask them to check? Let me know if I can help in any other way Janice x

Hi, If you buy the birth cert of one of their children her maiden name will be on it. Then you can look a match for the marriage. Gwynne

Hi Paul, Where did you find the marriage? Because I had a look on Ancestry (BMD), FreeBMD and FamilySearch (IGI) and nothing on any of those three for a William Whittingham marrying in Kent in 1849. Anyway, those are the three places I'd look for marriages post-1837. If you want to find the wife's surname, on Ancestry, I just click on the page, so you can see who else is on the page, and if you know his wife's first name, you can generally see what her surname is as she'll be on the same page as him. Same with FreeBMD. With FamilySearch it usually tells you straight up when you click on the record. Sorry, that's not much help, but good luck with it. Kat

If you believe it is the right marriage, order the cert with a check point on the wife being Lavinia. If youre right you have spent a worthwhile £7, if you are wrong you only lose £3. Go on. Where did you find this marriage?

Hi Paul On checking 1837 there is a Lavina Bear same area same quarter. On ancestry when I put in Lavina Bear it brought up marriage same quarter and same district and year, it also brought up a Savinia Bear? However, the only William on there is a William Chambers? So where do we go from here? Have I missed something? Janice x

hi there thanx for all the replies sorry i couldnt get back to you all last night but i had to go. Im still not 100% sure that Lavinia Bear is the right one, would you be 100% in telling me this is her? regards Paul

Janice Report 4 May 2006 22:35

Hi Paul I am not sure Lavinia Bear is the right one, but I will stand corrected of Helen is sure. Do you by any chance have a detail on a birth of any of their children? Some years on 1837 give Mothers maiden name. If so post it back and I will ceheck 1837 for you and see if I can locate anything. Janice

Helen Report 4 May 2006 22:45

William is not on the usual Ancestry BMDs as he's not been 'transcribed' yet by FreeBMD. If you use the Beta index http://www.ancestry(.)co(.)uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx (take out brackets) and search for your William using March 1849 quarter you will see he is there with the reference, the image is clear - V is the roman numeral for 5 and page 429. You can cross check by searching for Lavinia on the Beta pages, the handwriting matches up.

Sounds like Helen is right to me and the reference on 1837 for William is so close and has I said my eyesight is not as good as it was. So my final number 7 could very well be 9. I have found Agnes J Whittingham born june Quarter 1866 registration district Medway. This is the one on the 1891 census. Ref: 2a 385. This will give you the Mother's Maiden name if you are still insure. I however am now convinced that Helen is correct. Janice x

Yes, ditto Paul, I'm convinced Helen is correct too. You will know for sure if you order one of their children's birth certificates, but I would err on the side of this being the correct person, Lavinia Bear. Well done to Helen for figuring it out - you've certainly taught me something, thanks! Kat
