hi,trying to find info on the above,its all very confusing but here goes,my grandad was born 10/5/1907,hi mother was a kathleen newbold,kathleen then got married in september 1907 to a james kerry,we dont know if he is grandads father or not,all i know is that grandad took the newbold name.any help would be great

Do you have the birth cert? If it doesn't include a father's name, I fear you will never know. One would think that, if the man his mother married was the child's father, then he would have assumed the husband's surname. There is no logical reason for him not to have done so. Reg

Have you found your Grandad's birth registration? It could be under either surname.

my aunty is hoping to get a birth cert soon,grandad was born in scarborough,families are so complicated

Janine, Having problems finding a Kathleen Annie Newbold on the 1901 census or a birth registration about 1886. If you are able to scan and e-mail the marriage certificate would take a look to see if I can help work out her fathers first name. I believe this is James Kerry in 1891 mistranscribed. Image looks like Kerry and fathers name is Thomas and is a coal miner. 1891. thanks all for your help,im enjoying trying to find things out,might never know why my grandad took his mothers name,its quite strange to think how i got my maiden name (newbold) will have to look into kathleens life for any info on the newbolds

if its any help my grandad was born in scarborogh i think,on 10th may 1907,im not sure what surname he has on the birth certificate,but its james leslie newbold,he got married at the age of 23 to a edna may clamp in 1932

If he was born in 1907, he was older than 23 in 1932. Reg

looks like the marriage cert iw wron,its actually a copy so could have been copied wrong,he must have been 24 when he got married because he was 74 when it was his 50th anniversary,really need his birth cert
