Find Ancestors

Hi All, I have started to look at a line that I have been stuck on and guess what I'm still stuck. I have John Stafford on 1881 census married to Amelia with daughter Amelia, Middlesex. I am trying to find him on earlier census. His birthplace is Southwark. I think I have found him 1841 Southwark age 2, parents John and Mary Stafford 32 & 30 (not born in county). Can anyone help with 1851,61 and 71 Any help much appreciated. Since originally posting this I have obtained the marriage cert of John Stafford and Amelia Hewitt. It says that Johns father is called William Stafford and he was a shoemaker . Can anyone now find him on 1841 census please. Many Thanks Karen

Hi I have the birth cert for Amelia Stafford (daughter) 1874 gives John Stafford ( bootmaker as father) and Amelia Stafford (formerly hewitt) mother. I do have the 1881 census and found the marriage on freebmd. I do not appear to have the marriage cert among the many that I have accumulated. Karen

hiya karen i would strongly suggest you get cert of marriage, that way you'd have definate proof of fathers names occupations, and be able to go back further, without chasing wrong lines, as you can see through census details he changes place of birth frequently julie

I can't see him or wife Amelia in 1871, nor him any earlier. As Julie suggests, getting the marriage cert will give you his father's name, which would confirm (or not) your find in 1841.

Thank You - I think I will have to get cert. Amelia Stafford jr married a Samuel Oliver Bull and then Joseph Sewell (my gt grandfather). She died in 1920. Karen

Thanks for your help - I have just ordered cert. so will have to wait and see!!. I also could not see them in 1871. I thought that would be quite easy seeing as though he and Amelia had just married in 1870. Is there any logical explanation as to why we cant see them?

hiya karen, the most logical explanation is that they are mistranscribed, i could not find them in 71 either, i did try all different spellings, but still no avail had an idea bb in a mo Julie

hiya karen i just tried searching with her full name and initals, also tried using the name amy, which could be short for amelia, nothing, absolutly zilch, the only other thing i did come up with was an amy stafford, servant, in st pancras, but born in st georges in 1851, i'll find it again and post it julie
