Hi Lisa, Ive had a quick look at 1841 but theres just too many Thomas Cav(i)(e)(a)ll's to check. With regard to the roman numerals if you do order the cert just give them the roman numerals anyway, you dont have to translate it. Suzanne |

Well, he could have been transporting goods or passengers, or he could even be a sea fisherman, mariner is quite a loose term really. I would go with getting the birth certificate of one of the children if I were you. Kate. |

What does a sailor do? Is that transporting goods by ship? |

As for the mariner business, yes, a mariner was a sailor, he would not be in the Royal Navy though. I don't think that ships at sea are included in the 1851 census but I'm not certain. Can't see a section for them on ancestry, anyway. Kate. |

I would say that to be sure that the marriage above is the right one, you would be best to get George's birth certificate. I don't think there will be too many George Atherton Cavells around! But I can't see his birth on FreeBMD so you may have to look through the GRO indexes quarter-by-quarter to find the index entry. Kate. |

Hi Suzanne I'm betting that that's them as well, but I have other relatives where the marriage is not recorded. Can anyone find Thomas CAVELL in the 1841 census for me please. |

I've found what appears to be my CAVELL family in the 1851 census. They are listed as CAVILL and the wife Amelia has 'mariner's wife' under occupation. Is that a sailor/naval man?I have know idea who the husband is. How can I find a list of mariners in the 1851 census? Both sons are in boys homes in the 1861 census and their is a death of Amelia CAVELL in 1852. I cannot find either of the sons in 1871. their names are Thomas James CAVELL c1848 & George Atherton CAVELL c1851.Can anyone find them for me? Any idea how I could find out the husbands name? I'd appreciate your thoughts. Lisa in Australia |
