A possible way to check further is to go into the census options for that year, underneath the search box all the counties are listed, then when you click on the correct county you will find the diff enumeration districts listed - before you go out of your census return check all the details it should give you the district etc at the top of the return. Find that district and it will give you the enumeration details for the census- the names of all the roads that are enumerated will be listed on the page. It may help clarify the name. Hope all that makes sense, I will have a look there for you now. Regards, Lyn x |

As they mostly weren't able to read, I don't suppose in most villages the postman was even considered. When I looked up where my husband lived in the 1881 census (no, he wasn't there then, but the house was), we had a job to find it, because we looked for the number it had now, and found that in fact the numbering had been changed, because more houses had been built along the road. We were able to pinpoint his because some of the houses had names, which hadn't been changed. So imagine the confusion if you used to live at 150 London Road, and it suddenly became 160 London Road. You're lucky you've got the name of a road, even if you don't know what it is! On my rural ancestors' earlier censuses, there's nothing apart from the village name to tell where they lived. nell |

Thanks Jan for that bit of info. I had already ruled out the work house but could not for the life of me work out why there was no numbers on the houses. Best wishes Cheryl :) |

Cheryl, it wasn't until much later that houses had numbers, so in the census returns they just showed the name of the street (or in this case the yard) where people lived. Jan |

I tend to agree with Jan - Nixons Yard. It doesn't look like the other Ms on the page and it's certainly not a W. Have you tried to find it on Streetmap.co.uk? |

Impossible! Moon? On the next page it looks more like Myon's and on previous pages more like Myons. On the page describing the enumeration district it looks like Nixons! |
