Thanks for your help. I think I am going to have to order a certificate for a marriage I have found which is John Morris Ayre /Caroline Adams St. George in the East 1865 1st quarter, vol 1c, p653. This of course is a little later than I would have anticipated but with the middle name of Morris I feel it has to be he same guy. The other alternative is to order the birth certificate of Ann Jane Ayre 1856 3rd quarter, City of London 1c, 85 with a checking reference of John and Caroline as parents. More money (not to mention a 3 week wait) !!! Thanks again for all your help. Elaine

Saw that one Gloria but occupation doesn´t fit - if I remember rightly it was an engineer. should have said that on the 1861 he is a wine carman- and on subsequent census he has been a cellarman
