some idea of dates would be useful

To help anyone else looking Some dates would be a good idea. I know this area - I drive across Sutton Crossroads everday on my way to work. The parish might be listed as Sutton or Sutton-cum-Lound. The parish name still varies today. Retford is the local town, where all bmd's would be registered. Barbara

Sorry Nigel Had a look through the censuses for the area, and can't see them. The railway line is the East coast Main Line, which was run by Great North Eastern Railways, so they may have some records. Barbara

If you're ever looking up Retford somewhere and can't find it, its proper name is East Retford! - a bit like looking for Hull and needing to look for it under Kingston upon Hull. Christine

thanks elaine.does welham cross bar as an address mean anything to anybody?

Barbra

Barbra Report 30 Jun 2006 14:05

Nigel I don't know about Welham cross bar, but Welham is the village next to Clarborough - hope that helps. And is this the family on the 1891 (they've been mistranscribed as Charman - but definitely Channon on the original) Edwin Channon abt 1840 Ottery St Mary, Devon Juna Channon abt 1840 Kentishire, Devon Walter E Channon abt 1864, Ottery St Mary, Devon William H Channon, abt 1874, Clarborourgh, Notts Thomas Channon abt 1877 Clarborough, Notts. Leonard Channon abt 1883 Clarborough, Notts. Robert Channon abt 1881 Clarbourgh, Notts. RG12/2639 Barbara

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 30 Jun 2006 16:37

Nigel The fact that the family was in a different county is easily explained by the fact that the head was employed on the railways.............in those days railway employees had to go wherever they were sent to do their job. Reg

thanks marie and reg, pontefract would explain a vague reference my dad made about sheffield but things still a bit hazy.didn't realise rail workers moved around but it seems to explain the different county.
