I have the SOS abbreviation in my Dad's record & it means Struck off Strength. It's used when leaving a unit. If the soldier went to another unit this would show as TOS, or Taken on Strength.

Karen, Your g.father would have been demobilised on 15.1.46 and transferred to the Z reservists on 16.01.46 which means that he could have been recalled to active service at a moments notice. Fir instance some Z reservists were called up for the Suez crisis !!!!!11 P.J.

It just means he's taken off that Army Group list and added to another list, on my fathers it showed this when he was wounded and he was added to X list and at the end of the war added to e list pending release. He then went to Class Z Terr. Army Res. Keith

Sorry Karen, I should have explained the SOS means that he was illegally missing. This would be Desertion or Absent Without Leave which is the lesser offence. I would have expected the Military record to show punishments and or discharge which would have given a specific reason for the SOS. JIm

Yes, thats fine Margaret, but it is not a final entry as there should be reference to his disposal and or discharge. Jim

Can you tell me if there are any further entries dated after the SOS. It may have been that he was moved to another command. Jim
