Can anyone tell me if there was such a thing as records of still births in 1928? my great grandmother died in childbirth from complications but we haven't been able to either trace a living child or a death and i was wondering if the child died at birth if there would be any trace and where to find it

it would be on the still birth register if the child was still born. it will have a birth and a death registered if the child lived , even for just one day Sorry to refer to 'it' you gave us no clue as to gender. can yougive us any names ( maybe we can trace Grandmas death, which will give a start point)

Hi yes sorry am unsure as how to deal with this. Her name was Catherine Darlington formerly Haslam who lived in fleetwood lancashire. She died at home in 68 warren st from childbirth adherent placenta and post partum haemorrhage. which i think maybe means she actually had the child. The date was 6th january 1928 there are a few small ltters at the bottom of the cert which look like they say No Pm or no pr or something similar does that help?

It sounds like the child was born and she had what is now sometimes called a retained placenta, ie. the placenta does not come away properly after delivery. Thank goodness this can be treated nowadays. I wonder if the child could have been born in the previous quarter, ie.December 1927? Gwyn

Supposedly it took a long time for my great grandfather to get over her death, it sounds like she suffered a lot. i'm desperate to close this chapter on the family history and find the child if it was born

As you know the actual location of Catherine's death, I wonder if nearby church burial records would help. If the child died or was stillborn there may be a record to say that the child was buried nearby or even with Catherine. Gwyn

Thanks but i've tried that until i can get to the actualy church to see if they hole any records again i'm stuck. I did actually visit the church but the gravestone is long gone and the family were not given any explanation or consultaion before it happened

It's so sad when that happens, Leigh-Anne. The burial plan records might be held elsewhere. I have known nearby town council( parks and cemetaries dept) to hold them. The nearest archive to the area may have copies or possibly a library. Some Family History groups have made a record of memorial inscriptions, which also might help your quest. Good luck. Gwyn

Hi just a thought what about a hospital for that area? Perhaps the baby was taken there presumable the baby was born at home? If the baby was taken to hospital and indeed the mother they may hold a file for it? What about the father? Is he known or anything as he may know what happened any further from that? No pm i think means no postmortam. The address you named was it her address did she live there with anyone else?

Leigh-anne Report 11 Jul 2006 11:50

From what i can gather she lived at her parents address with her husband. her father was present at the death. Her death certificate states she died at home. Her husband my great grandfather remarried and in that day you didnt actually discuss things like that especially with your children so although my family know she died in childbirth no one knows what happened to the child it has only suggested it was still born as no child was mentioned in the family. my grandmother was the first child from his second marriage and his eldest surviving child and between his first wife's death

Hi i c what you mean so the father your ggf never discussed any further on the matter. Maybe if the child would of survived you would of all known (?) due to the fact he may of brought the child up etc (?) Might be worth you contacting a hospital for the area as i would of thought she would of been taken there (?)

After 1927 there was a stillbirths register. . Access is very limited and only allowed for parents and siblings of the dead child. Because the parents have died ( I believe you need proof, with certs.) as a surviving half sibling, your grandmother may be able to ask for a check of the Register. Not sure how strict they would be re. not full siblings but it's worth a try. Gwyn

not as far as we know. she died at home and nothings been said about her going hospital. there is the possibiliy that if the child survived it might have gone to the haslam family and been brought up with them

Perhaps you should search the family name Hasalam not sure if i spelt that right for if they brought the baby up maybe they adopted and he or she is now that surname hense why you cannot find them maybe you should search for a marriage or death in that surname also? just a thought. ;o)

Could she possibly have had twins? There are these two deaths in the Dec. qtr. of 1927. George Darlington, age 0 Dec. qtr. 1927, Prescot, 8b, 719 and with the same reference:- Harry Darlington, age 0 Dec. qtr. 1927, Prescot, 8b, 719 Both births were registered in the same qtr. (Dec. 1927) with mother's maiden name Hamill (could you have made a mistake with maiden name?):- Births George Darlington Dec. qtr. 1927, Prescot, 8b, 1127 Harry Darlington Dec. qtr. 1927, Prescot, 8b, 1127 Kath. x
