I am tearing my hair out and hope someone can help me out there. I am searching for a birth record of my G G G Grandfather John Whiteman. From his military records he was stated as being born in Parish of Nelson, Glasgow, but there is no such parish. Could be Parish of Neilston, Glasgow but I can't find him. His parents are listed as William and Flora nee McDonald and I can't find a marriage for them either. I'm thinking they could have been married in England? Could someone check if they can find this family anywhere in the country please. John Whiteman was born in c1831 as he died in 1915 at the age of 84. John Whiteman was a Farrier Major at Curragh Camp in Ireland when he left the army c1874 and I have reason to believe that his father, William was also in the army. Many thanks for this....

Yes that is definitely him as I know he was stationed at Hulme at some point in his life before moving back to Scotland. The problem is I can't seem to find a record of his birth anywhere, not even on Scotlands People.

I looked yesterday afternoon on scotlandspeople for him, theres no sign of him or his given parents marriage. I wonder if he made it up, perhaps if I look for the man he is living with on the 41 census and see if there is a relationship.

birth were not formally recorded until 1837 -sothere will be no birth cert as such. the best you'll find is a baptism , if indeed he was baptised.

Thank you so much for all this info, I am having such trouble with this side of my family! I had come across the John Whiteman at St Boswells and thought that could be him, perhaps as you say both parents were dead and he lived with family, but I would be more convinced if I could find an actual marriage record for his parents William Whiteman and Flora McDonald. At time of John Whiteman's marriage to Emily Morgan (1859) his father is stated as William Whiteman, Mechanic. It does not say that he is deceased. On John Whiteman's death certificate (1815) it states that his father William Whiteman was a soldier (artillery) and his mother is Flora Whiteman m.s. McDonald?? But where are they? I'm sure John must have had brothers and sisters!
