I'm looking for a Florence TURNER, age 15, born and living in Coventry. She was a bar maid. If someone could tell me the address/occupations too that would be great. Thank you. |

Thanks Jim. Could you tell me the occupations of any of the other members of the household? This would help me confirm it's the right person. |

Yes, it definitely seems to fit very well. I know the family were all publican-related, so it seems like you've finally found my ancestors. Thanks a million Jim! |

Well, I certainly appreciate the offer.. I was hoping to find Florence's parents, but finding her uncle/aunt is a good start. I suppose the 1891 is the next step? Can you help me with that? |

Perhaps this helps -- marriage of parents Marriages Sep 1878 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ==>Cotton Hannah Sophia Coventry 6d 556 Hancock Catherine Coventry 6d 556 Maton John Coventry 6d 556 ==>Turner William Coventry 6d 556 So Joseph was brother of Florence's mother. Incidentally, you might be able to get more information from licensing records. I found quite a lot on my wife's family that way. Jim |

Can you give me some more details on the licensing records? I've never heard of them. |

They are the licenses granted by magistrates to people to run public houses. They were public documents and copies should be available in local archives. Jim |

That's interesting Jim. Do you know how far back they go? My husband's greatgrandparents were inn-keepers in Gateshead in 1871. Kath. x |

I guess it varies Kathleen. I was at Cambridge office. They went back well before 1800. Jim you could probably phone archives and ask them how far they go. Jim |

I will have to look into those. I have at least one other ancestor who was a publican. Thank you very much for all your help Jim. |

Thanks for that Jim. Just realised it was Newcastle and not Gateshead in 1871, which will be Northumberland and not Durham, and I have the feeling Northumberland County Record office is closed at the moment. Have to put this on the 'to do' list. Thanks Kath. x |

Are you still there Jim? There's a Hannah Sophia Turner on the 1901 in Coventry, age 43, and she's a tailoress. This must be Florence's mother. If you can look her up I'd be very grateful. |

Nothing clear for husband. There is one in Paddington but he shows as single and is a housekeeper. Hannah previously had no job, husband was a tailor in 1891 . Jim |
