Military records are searchable via the national archives website, but for more recent records they might not be listed on there. If you google 'military records' there are quite a few sites that you can check, they give you contact details for each of the forces and who can or can't access the records. It might not seem significant at the time but also look at witnesses on marriage certs, informants on death certs etc, they can often be useful when you look at family links. Glen |

FJ is listed as a Charge Hand on the cert. and FH is shown as an Engineer. I have another relative that I'm looking for in the military, who or where can I contact to find out more info on their records? Emily |

It does cost a little more, but you get a partial refund if the names don't match. The hardest part is always to get back to 1901 and then into the census returns, which are only a guide, but help narrow down your search criteria for the earlier generations. What occupation does the marriage cert give?If in the forces you might find you can trace the birth details through military records. It's a brick wall at the moment, but sometimes you have to go round the wall instead of through it. Glen |

Thanks, I believe Camberwell could be the correct area. Emily |

Thankyou. I didn't know you could do that and specify a name. |

Emily, there is 1 Frederick H Collins in the 1901 Census aged 1 born London Kensington and living Camberwell. I do not have credits to access the image and cannot access Ancestry on my work PC so perhaps someone else could do that for you. A word of caution however is that there are over 20 Frederick Collins aged 0 - 2 in 1901 from all over the Country so this still may not be the one you are looking for! best wishes Hilary |

First thing is have you found any likely birth references? You could order a cert with the fathers name as a reference checking point,if the father on the birth cert isn't the name you specify the cert isn't issued but you get a partial refund. Presumably the guess for his year of birth is based on his age on the marriage cert, take that as a guide only,it may be a few years adrift. Glen |

Yes, I looked at the BMD in Ancestry and as it's a common name, I couldn't find a birth looking at all quarters that would make him 21 in Feb 1945. |

OK....thanks for the feedback Now, Emily, please say exactly where you searched.......did you look at the FULL bmd records on Ancestry? And if it said MMN Collins.......that was what it meant. Which years and which quarters have you looked at? You'll get plenty of help, but you do need to give info whcih is as precise as you can manage. Reg |

I've got Greenford in Middlesex when he got married, but not sure where FJ was born. Reg, I have posted something like this before, but got led onto a wild goose chase. I had loads of people added to my tree that were not related. When I got the copy of marriage cert, I had a completely different father. Now I have to start from scratch. I do know that FJ had a sister Muriel Collins and she was born roughly 1926. I looked on a site and where it has 'mothers maiden name' it said Collins. But I'm presuming Collins is the married name. Emily Have you posted this before? Or am I dreaming? In any case, you'll need to give some idea of location, at least........... For a start.....where did the marriage take place? Do you know when the younger one died? Familysearch website is unlikely to be of any use.............it carries parish records; and not very recent ones at that. Please tell us exactly which quarters you have viewed on Ancestry...........absolutely no point in duplicating effort. Reg |

Hi. We don't have much info on my Grandfather in law, Frederick John Collins. except his marriage cert with shows his father as Frederick Henry Collins. I don't know any dates of birth for either, but FJ was born roughly 1923 and FH was approx 1900. I don't want to keep paying out ordering certs unless I know they are correct. Can anyone help, as I think my next step would to go to the records office. I can't find FH or FJ on Ancestry or Familysearch, so I''ve come to a dead end. Any help would be great. Thanks Emily |
