Here I am again - and once again, thank you so much for all your help. I think between you you have probably more or less solved it. However, unfortunately, I haven't got the once piece of information I was really looking for - George SYRETT's date/place of birth! I have two (possibly three) generations of SYRETTs in London/Middlesex - all Thomas's and all working as confectioners, biscuit bakers, pastry cooks or similar. They originally came from Norwich in Norfolk, moved to Great Yarmouth, and ended up in London in the late 1830s. I have found them in quite a few directories, including Pigot's 1839 Directory of London where Thomas SYRETT was a pastry cook at 420 Oxford Street. I then found (in the Post Office London Directory 1841) a George SYRET as a biscuit baker at 338 Oxford Street. The directory also lists a John Bell & Co. (Chemists) at the same address (of which more later!). I've been trying to find information on George in the hope of tying him in to my family. The 1851 census entry for one of my Thomas's also includes his niece, Sophia SYRETT, born c1835 in Oxford Street (no sign of brother George). I then found Sophia on the 1841 (the census entry in a previous thread) with brother George and Hannah BELL. Note the 'BELL' connection! Looking at the image for this census entry, I think Hannah, Sophia and George were a separate household, but living in the same building as Abraham and Sophia (according to single/double enumerator's marks made). From all the above, it definitely looks likely that there's a connection between one of my Thomas's and George Snr., but I don't know how to confirm it! Thanks again for all your help. Penny |

PHEW! Have been busy all day but just come online to see if any more information has been added - and am gobsmacked at all your help. As it's late now (and I'm suffering from the heat!), will check it all out in depth tomorrow and post again. In the meantime, many many thanks for your help. Penny |

okay - I've sussed it - the household on the 1841 has been transcribed a bit skewiff this is how it should be: Aleane Saunders abt 1806 born out of county - gardener (first name should read Abraham) Sophia Saunders abt 1816 Middlesex, England George Syrett abt 1834 Middlesex, England View Record Sophia Syrett abt 1835 Middlesex, England Hannah Bell abt 1821 Middlesex, England (can;t make ot if shes actually in same house) and heres the marriage for Sophia Marriages: Spouse: ABRAHAM SAUNDERS SOPHIA SYRETT Marriage: 26 FEB 1840 Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey, England |

There are 2 deaths listed for George Syrett Mar 1838 Whitechapel, Dec 1838 Edmonton and one for George Syret Jun 1838 Strand possibly a reason for them not being found |

okay - here's a theory Sophia gives her birthplace in one census as The STrand and George gives his as Oxford Street (thats the children - not the parents) There is a death for a George Syret in 1838 in Strand district which could be their father - leaving mother Sophia free to remarry |

Trying to locate George and Sophia SYRET(T) (husband and wife) on the 1841 census. He may be listed as confectioner, biscuit baker, etc. I don't know years/places of birth, but they married in 1833 in Middx.. The two children that I know of have been found living separately from their parents in Twickenham, Middx. Thanks for any help you can give. ~~Penny~~ |
