Alexandra 1837online is the GRO index to births, marrriages and deaths. So are the complete images on ancestry. Freebmd are transcribed images, also available on ancestry. As I said before, you can only get more information than is in the index by buying the certificate. nell

You wont see anything different on 1837 - it is the same as the complete images on Ancestry (which is free)

OK, I understand your problem better now. I guess the bottom line is - how badly do you want the information? You could order a marriage cert specifying groom's age within a span that would fit with 1924 birth, or specifying father's name to match that on birth cert I suppose. You have 3 possibles. If they are all wrong it will cost you £3 x 3 checks so that's maximum £9, or of course £6 for two wrong checked certs and £7 for the right one which will give you more clues. nell

Ok James A Browning was born 1924 dec QTR in Southwark MMN Pickett He was put into the Shirley Oaks Childrens home in around the 1930 area maybe just after From then we have no information on him. LMA hold a file from the home on him but will not disclose me the information. I have been searching marriages from 1954 plus or minus 10 in the first entry i found the correct james will be around 20/21 and so forth.

Alexandra What do you know about James A Browning? Put the info here and we may be able to help. Have you got a rough idea of when he was born - you seem to feel he would have married in the 1940s, so I would guess he would have been born around 1910s-20s. nell

Do you know if James A Browning had any children??

Alexandra You can't find something if its not indexed. Ages at time of marriage aren't indexed and middle names sometimes aren't either. You can look for likely births in the births index (assuming most folk married between ages of 21-35). Some entries on www.familysearch.org give ages at time of marriage but most don't. nell

oh i see didnt know that about freebmd thanks

Elaine

Elaine Report 8 Aug 2006 13:24

Alexandra - you wont find anything on freeBMD. For anything after 1910 you need to check the complete images. Sorry to say - only way to find ages is to buy the certificates.

G83 Report 8 Aug 2006 13:23

Ok i see but is there anyway i can find age at marriage or middle inital meaning etc? freebmd doesnt have these entries thanks to all

Elaine Report 8 Aug 2006 13:21

You can check the names on the complete marriage indexes on Ancestry http://www.ancestry(.)co(.)uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx for example - you have James A Browning married ? Francis Q1 1945 in Wallasey 8A 1313 select the year 1945 and enter the surname Francis. Scroll through Francis names until you find one that has the same reference as the one you have found (and of course with the spouses name as Browning)
