Trying to find the names of my grandmothers parents, I am told her mum was called Annie Messenger this would be her married name but not sure of her dads name, dont know any dates except that my grandmother was born in 1924 and had a few older brothers and sisters, so this is a long shot! I believe they might have come from the Manchester areas if this is any help, I have tried looking on family search but to no avail. So if anyone can find me any Messengers from the Manchester area I would be very grateful, if there are too many too list then it doesnt matter as I dont want to put anyone to too much trouble. Thankyou! Marie: )

I've tried to spread it out a bit since I first posted the list. Hope it's easier to understand. If you want the full details of any of them let me know, although I won't be online for too long. Kath. x

Do you have your grandmother's full name? If she was born in 1924, her mother's maiden name will be in the birth index. Kath. x

My grandmother was called Harriet Messenger before she married, her mother was Annie Messenger but I dont know her maiden name at all, and I dont know Annies Husbands name either, I have a feeling this one is going to be an akward one, My grandmother was brought up in Manchester but not sure if thats hwere her parents came from when they were younger. Thankyou again, Marie: )

I can't find a Harriet Messenger birth in 1923, 1924, or 1925. Could your grandmother have been born before her parents were married, and registered with her mother's maiden name? Kath. x

Not sure to be honest Kath, thats so strange because I am almost sure I have her birth year right, I will have to check with my dad. Its got me thinking now! I know she was one of many children and they all have the same surname, mind you that doesnt mean anything does it? I will have to double check things with my dad and get back to you. Thankyou Again Marie: )

Just found out that Harriet would be about 84 today so that means i had the date wrong, so sorry, so looking at 1922, also her mum Annie was married to a George. Hope this is useful. Thankyou Marie: )

I've managed to find your grandmothers birth:- Harriet Messenger, mother's maiden name Miller Sept. qtr. 1921, Manchester, 8d, 400 With this information I decided to look again at the list of Messengers I gave you from 1901. I thought that Harriet might have been named after a grandparent. There is a George Messenger who had a mother called Harriet, so I did a search for marriages of a George Messenger to see if I could find one married to an Annie Miller. Up popped this one which seems to be right:- George Messenger, spouse Annie Miller June qtr. 1914, Manchester, 8d, 375 Hope this helps. Kath. x

I am fairly certain that these are the details of your great grandfather George Messenger from the 1901 census. He's the only George Messenger who is of the right age and unmarried at the time:- Name: George Messenger Age: 9 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1892 Relation: Son Father's name: George Mother's name: Harriet Gender: Male Where born: Manchester, Lancashire, England Civil parish: Manchester Ecclesiastical parish: Manchester Albert Memorial County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Street address: 121 Churnet Street (that's what it looks like) Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Single Education: Employment status: View image Registration district: Manchester Sub-registration district: St George ED, institution, or vessel: 22 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 48 Household Members: Name Age William Cawley 40 Emily Eva Jones 16 Fanny M Jones 14 Florence Messenger 14 George Messenger 46 George Messenger 9 Harriet Messenger 52 I've saved the image if you'd like it - just message me with your email address and I'll send it to you. It looks like George's mother had been married before as the two girls named Jones are described as step-daughters to the head of household. Kath. x

I've had a look on the 1901 census for Annie Miller, but there are quite a few in Manchester of about the right age, so to find her family you would have to order the marriage certificate for her and George (reference given earlier) and this will give you her father's name and occupation, which will make it easier to narrow them down.
