Hi, I have Walter Brown 1861 Basford, Nottingham. In 1901, he is in Nottingham with wife Eliza 1861 Nottm and loads of kids including Cyril 1897. In 1891, he is with wife Jane E 1861 Nottm 1881 wife Mary J 1861 Nottm. I am trying to work out if he had 3 different wives or if they were mistranscribed initials and are the same person or two people. Can anyone help? Cheers, Laura x |

The occupation is often a lead. In 1881 and 1891 he is a shoemaker. (though wives are different).By 1901 he is a hawker. It could well be that Mary J died and he remarried. But he changes his occupation by 1901. There are more than one Walter Browns born 1861 in Notts. Could be just coincidence. Jo |

Thanks Geoff, I think we can now begin to assume that Jane and Eliza are likely to be one person. Laura x |

Why is she Mary in 1881, if she married in 1879 as Eliza? And where do the Wels children fit in? Reg |

Hi Jo, the kids names match too which is why I have followed the line. There is another Walter but from a different area of Nottm, There is a member with him on here and I was able to count him out. Laura x |

I hadnt noticed that before Reggie, the Wels thing! Aah, just adds to the confusion! I know 1901 is definitely mine, he was my grans grandad and she said he was a shoemaker, I also have his daughter Annies marriage and death which tie in. Gran can remember an uncle Arnold too which again ties in. Laura x |
