Ahh this is driving me mad!! My grandma today asked me if I could help her find out what her mother died of. Firstly I need to find out when she died but I cant find it anywhere. Grandma says she was about 2 when her mother died making the date 1935. Can anyone help me please? Her name was Hilda Emily Bruty nee Jefferson. She was born 1900 in Leeds, married 1924 in Leeds but could of died in either Leeds or Stoke By Clare in Suffolk. Thank you! From one frustrated person!!

Before we start looking, can you say exactly which records you have looked at? You say you can't find it 'anywhere'.......where is that? Where she might have died isn't really relevant, as she had an unusual name.....the GRO records are listed alphabetically Reg

Well I've tried the BMD section on Ancestry 1928 to 1939 and I'm now looking under her maiden name too on there. I don't really know where else to look. Maybe it has been mistranscribed somewhere but I don't know how to look for those. Many thanks

you can look for free on ancestry BMD 1837-1983 http://www.ancestry(.)co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx Remove brackets Jeanette

Right.......so you have viewed the images for each quarter of the years you mention........perhaps the death was earlier or later than your relative remembers. Reg

Did you check the bottom of each page? Quite often you will find entries that have been missed out in the index have been added at a later date at the bottom of the appropriate page, very easy to miss if you have only looked at the part of the page where you would have expected to see them. I didn't think of that Jennifer, thanks I'll go back and have another look. I'll also try looking in the 1940's Reggie.

Ah ha, there it is. Thanks ever so much :D I can't believe grandma thought she was 2 when her mum died when she was actually 7!!

Joanne, I can...........memory plays tricks, and also when you're a child, your idea of time is different. I'd always thought my mother died when I was 6.......once I started doing my family tree, and looked for the info, I found she had, in fact, died when I was 7. Reg

Now we've found it. I was wondering do all death certificates have the cause of death on them? This is the main reason for finding the death you see as grandma was told that her mum died of food poisoning but she also thought that was a lie so would like to know the truth.

Good to see you only lost a year though Reggie, not 5 :)

The cert will give the cause of death........as known by the informant. Reg

Is there anywhere where you can view a persons cause of death without having to pay £23 for a certificate? It is rather alot of money isn't it.

ErikaH Report 11 Sep 2006 10:36

A cert costs £7.00............buy it online from www.gro.gov.uk Where did you get £23.00 from???????? Reg

Reggie, its asking me for the date she died and I only know what we found out from the bmds on ancestry and it won't seem to accept any question marks! Do you think I should put in a rough date and hope they search around it?

Jeanette

Jeanette Report 11 Sep 2006 10:55

when you order cert at begining it asks you do you have GRO ref (page and vol number) say yes then you wont have to put exact date in and it will cost you only £7 Jeanette http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp
