**Liz in Scotland** Report 13 Sep 2006 11:21

Hi Liz, There may not be a record of either her birth or Baptism, this is not to say she wasn't Baptised. An entry in the register of the C of S for Births/Baptisms was considered quite expensive in those days, reason why a lot of births/baptisms cannot be found in Scotland. Liz

Hi Liz, 1841 census has both William and Isabella born out of county, so it's possible that you have the marriage for them. Piece: SCT1841/622 Place: Barony-Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 12 Civil Parish: Barony Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: St Matthews Folio: 12 Page: 2 Address: Hill Square Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks DONALDSON William M 40 Glass Maker Outside Census County (1841) DONALDSON Isabella F 40 Outside Census County (1841) DONALDSON Margaret F 15 Outside Census County (1841) DONALDSON William M 15 Glass Maker Apprentice Outside Census County (1841) DONALDSON Joseph M 12 Outside Census County (1841) DONALDSON Thomas M 8 Lanarkshire DONALDSON Isabella F 4 Lanarkshire - Thimothy M 2 Lanarkshire Surname:possibly Donaldson LAW John M 20 Iron Forger Lanarkshire Ages were rounded down for all adults over the age of 15. Isabella Donaldson (mother) is not in 1851 index with the family, but she reappears in 1861 index along with Janet age 16 who also is not on 1851 index. Index has Father age 60 born Alloa and Isabella (mother) age 64 born Kincardine Liz

Well, of course Jean could well have died as a baby or as a child, but it might be very difficult to find out. The rest of the children's names match, don't they? I was just trying to find out if the family I had found on the census was the same one you had, really, and it looks as if they are the right ones. Kate.

Liz Report 12 Sep 2006 14:28

Val

Val Report 12 Sep 2006 14:11

Just to let you know on the 1841 cencus they rounded up the ages so these will be right and sometimes they put Jane instead of Jean

Liz Report 12 Sep 2006 14:03

thanks kate ive tried scotlands people, not much luck, it seems weird. the children you found are on the census, id found them apart from jean, didn't know about jean, on the census though the ages don't match up, it has margaret & william as 15, joseph as 12, thomas 8, isabella 4, timothy as 2. is there any reason why jean wouldn't have been on census? liz

Well, is this your Isabella on the 1841, then? If so, then some of the children's names match the IGI ones though the ages might be a bit out (but it is the 1841, after all!): View Record Name Estimated Birth Year BirthPlace Civil Parish County Parish Number View Record Isabella Donaldson abt 1801 Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622 View Record Isabella Donaldson abt 1837 Lanarkshire, Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622 View Record Joseph Donaldson abt 1829 Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622 View Record Margaret Donaldson abt 1826 Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622 View Record Thomas Donaldson abt 1833 Lanarkshire, Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622 View Record Timothy Donaldson abt 1839 Lanarkshire, Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622 View Record William Donaldson abt 1801 Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622 View Record William Donaldson abt 1826 Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622 View Record John Law abt 1821 Lanarkshire, Scotland Barony Lanarkshire 622 Kate.

These are the children listed on the IGI for those parents - do any of them match up with the 1841 census entry? 76. Just to clarify things, there won't be a birth record as such for her, as she was born before the start of civil registration, so what you want to find is her baptism? Still, luckily, since you already know who her parents were, you will still be able to work on tracing her line back even if you don't find her baptism. I can't see it on FamilySearch but you could try on Scotland's People in the 'OPR' section. Kate.

Hi Liz, The two dates you found are probably not marriage dates. In Scotland these are more likely to have been Banns. If a couple came from two different parishes then the proclamation of banns would be read out in both parishes, just another way of saying that a couple are intending to marry and would be read out by the minister on (usually) three consecutive Sundays. Liz Just another thought, since you found them in Glasgow 1841 census, does it say if parents were born out of county? if not then I don't think that would be their marriage details in Alloa or Perth
