Hi Ange, Well with a bit of help from 1837online who had transcribed your Ellen correctly I have now found her on Ancestry in 1891. She been transcribed as Higgins which are the family before her. Yet a few months later on the 1901 census she called them Wood and herself single !!! Bertha was registered as Wood in 1892

I see the twins were registered Best as well. Just noticed her birthplace on the 1901 is Rochester not Chatham. Maybe she's on the 1871 in Rochester

This I do know for sure. She had 4 girls Elizabeth Julia 1891 - Bertha 1892 and twins Gertrude & Minnie Francis 1901. Elizabeth b. 1891 was born a Best, by 1892 Ellen has reverted to Wood. Bertha was born a Wood and on the 1901 Ellen is calling herself and all her children Wood and there's no sign of husband Charles.

Long story here ----- although she claimed to be married to Charles Best and went by that name for a few years I've never found any proof of it !!! To add mud to the already murky waters I have a feeling that Ellen was born illegitimately

I know, that's the problem - too many Woods !!! Mother's name is possibly Hannah if that's any help but I'm not sure about that

Would be very grateful for any information from the 1871 and 1891 census on Ellen Wood b.1868 Chatham (Medway) Kent 1871 - she'll be age 3 and I'm sure she'll be in Chatham, I'm needing the other family names. In 1881 I believe her to be the Ellen Wood in the Medway Union Workhouse 1891 - now 23 and I think married to Charles Best, needing confirmation of this and childrens names (if any) Anything would help !
