Yep. Mothers usually gave their illegitimate children the middle name of the father. Well, sometimes anyways! I have to go now, but will check back later

I couldn't see them in 1891, but I did find this: Marriages Jun 1889 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >> Gardner Frances Morpeth 10b 589 Mole Ellen Morpeth 10b 589 Richardson John Morpeth 10b 589 >> Spears John Morpeth 10b 589 Which would fit for the middle name, and 1901.

Things are always mis-spelled. Gardner/Gardener/Gardiner = all the same thing usually :) I have Chappel, Chappell, Chapell etc It just depends how literate (or not) the people were.

could we check back to the earlier census to find this out? But the name is spelt GARDNER on the marraige not GARDINER so that cant be her birth? or can it?

All Marriage records have 4 or 6 people on them (sometimes 8) You can't know for definite without ordering the cert which one married which, but with this we can make an educated guess. I think either Agnes' mothers maiden name was Spears, or Agnes' mother married a Spears or Gardner, then had an affair with the other. eg: I found this in 1901... (not sure if it is her of not though!) John Spears 32 Fanny Spears 31 >> Agnes Spears 12 John George Spears 9 Andrew Spears 4 William H Spears 9 m

so what could have happened there then??? im confused So Spears is probably agnes' maiden name, i see now, its passed down the family enough isnt it!!! Who were those other 2 names then?

There is no Spears to match that one. I'll take a look for Mr White :) It may be that he didn't marry a Spears, and that it was her mothers maiden name, not hers - or she may have been married before. I think it is that one... Marriages Jun 1908 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DOCHERTY William Morpeth 10b 778 DODDS Elizabeth Morpeth 10b 778 >> GARDNER Agnes Spears Morpeth 10b 778 White James Henry Morpeth 10b 778

Use FreeBMD to search for the marriage. It should show up. If not, let me know their names.
