right im stuck .. john leach born sunderland 4/9/1828 married a jane lathan born c1827 at newcastle register office on 18/3/1851 i have a copy of the marriage cert . on the cert johns father is down as james leach profession glass maker. i have searched throught census and births but cant find any trace of him .. any ideas ??? christine

dont know where john was in 1841 which is why i havent been able to trace james...the earliest info i have for john is in 1851 living with janes family .

hi jess pieces of info were given to me by a relative a while back .. i do know that he john had a brother james so looks like yours might be the correct birth info

He must've died. There's nothing on the IGI, so you will have to look at the Parish records to find his burial and/or the marriage (if there was one)

1841 doesn't give relationships. Also, ages are usually rounded down to the nearest 5, after 15. (so 24 becomes 20, 36 becomes 35 etc) We can guess from the births, that all the Leach children are siblings. Spellings are irrelevant :) Remember that back then a lot of people couldn't read or write. I would guess (as I have indicated) that their mother Jane remarried.

Just a thought If James Leach died & Jane remarried could she be the Jane Harper in 1841 census with her new husband & their children, along with her children from first marriage ?

the puzzling bit is he isnt marked as dead on the marriage crt. and cant find his birth

Civil registration doesn't start until 1837, so you won't find anything on there for any of them, probably not even James' death. You need Parish Records now, which are available from the local records office, or some are online at the IGI - www.familysearch.org (take those that do not say 'extracted from source' with a pinch of salt though!)

yeah janice i do think that that is jane in the 1841 c especially as i have her gt grandson on my tree called james harper leach miller born 1876 .
