Hi Please help! I am looking for ancestors of my Great Great Grandfather, William Bishop Elsdon. All I know about him is that he married a Mary Ann Sellars in Sheffield in 1887 (I am not sure where he was born). According to his Marriage Cert, his father was called Thomas (could be his middle name) who was a Joiner,. William Bishop Elsdon was 21 yrs old when he married, so was born c1866. He was living at Broad Street, Sheffield when he married. William and Mary had a son, John William Elsdon on 30th June 1888. The family lived at Matthew Street, Sheffield at that time. Please, any help at all in tracing Williams parents, would be most greatfully appreciated. Hoping to hear from someone soon! Warm regards Natalie Mason |

Hi Natalie hopefully someone will come along to help you soon, but in the meantime, can I just rspectfully say that it isn't a very good idea to put your email address on here (even though GR won't let you do it properly!lol). Anyone who wants to contact you privately can easily message you on this site without needing your email address. Anyone - anyone at all - can read these boards, they do not have to be a member and your email address could attract unwelcome messages, as has happened to a few people already. Hope you don't mind me pointing this out, in the spirit of friendship! OC |

Thanks OC, I've deleted it!! Thank you Rose, William was a Drayman according to his marriage Cert, and the Birth Cert of his son John William. He used his middle name on the birth cert of his son, but not on his marriage cert. Strange! (unusual middle name isn't it?). Could the info you have given me be my William, given that his marriage cert has a father named as Thomas? Thanks Natalie |

Hi Rose I presume they were still in Sheffield, as my Grandfather (John William Elsdon born to a father of the same name) was born in 1911 here in Sheffield. Apart from William Bishop Elsdon, born c1866, all descendants were born in Sheffield. I am not sure where William was born, and can not find the family anywhere, I have had so much trouble trying to find them! How can one family just 'disappear' from all relevant Census reports! It truly has me baffled, and I really do not know where else to look for information re these ancestors! Kindest regards Natalie |

Natalie, I don't see them either. There are some other Elsdons born in the area and I can't find them. There's a Leonard who could be a brother. Rose |

Rose! You found them! How did you do it?! I have searched and searched, and never even saw a reference to Newbury. How strange that the children changed their names to Newbury, then when Willliam married, he was an Elsdon again. No wonder I couldn't find them! I can't thank you enough, honestly. If I can ever help you, please, just shout!! Thanks everyone, for all your help, I really, really appreciate it. Warmest regards Natalie xxx |

Hi Natalie, I used FreeBMD to see Elsdon births in Sheffield and saw Leonard and Charlotte Ellen. I knew they had to be theirs too. So then I just searched for all Leanards born in Sheffield and saw Leonard Newberry had a brother and parents who matched. That was the key. Still can''t see Mary Ann in 1901 though or Sarah and William in 1871. Do you know if William remarried? Marriages Mar 1913 (>99%) Elsdon William B Smith Sheffield 9c 852 Smith Elizabeth Elsdon Sheffield 9c 852 Rose |

Thanks so much Rose! I do not know if William remarried, but I will check. There is onel iving relative who MAY remember, although he was sketchy the last time I asked him about his family. Bless him, he is going on 90, so I don't expect him to remember too much, although he enjoys hearing of any new news re his family tree! I am wondering, why did William marry as ELSDON, his birth name, yet him and his wife Mary took his step-fathers name of Newbury after that? I find it very confusing! Warm regards Natalie |
