Got the blighters so you can apply for their marriage certificate as well. This will give you both of their Fathers. Charles Croucher married Elsie Clout Dec Qr 1913. Ref Bridge 2a 1983. Elsie's middle initial is either C, O or G so it could well be Olive, but you won't need that to apply.

You can apply online at this website http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ You may need to allow up to a week to get it.

Louis was the third child so its quite possible they were married a few years earlier. Thanks for your help and advice. Can you apply for birth certificates over the internet? Regards Alison

I have looked back to 1915 and can't find the marriage of a Croucher to a Clout. I did find this: Charles W Croucher married Lillian I Epps at East Ashford March Qr 1920 Ref 2a 1755 It is always possible that the Transcriber has got something wrong so, as I said earlier, apply for Grandad's birth cert and then come back to us. Also, does Mum know which of her Uncles and Aunts was the oldest and about when were they born? That will give me a better clue where to look for the marriage.

Alison Report 15 Jan 2007 17:52

BINGO!!!!! Mum recognises the name Clout and Louis is the correct spelling so you found the correct birth record!! Can you see any more detail? Thanks kindly Alison

Thanks Grampa Jim. she definately knew his bithday was November so perhaps we are a year or two out then. He died 31/1/1991 near Ashford. That date is definately right because i remember being in my first year of uni when i was told. Mum said aged 70 so i think my maths were wrong rather than Mum's memory. That would make it 1920??? Sorry. My mistake Alison

There is no Lewis Croucher listed in the BMD Index for 1921 or 1st Qr 1922. There is a Louis F Croucher, Mother's maiden name Clout, registered in the Dec Qr of 1920. The reference is East Ashford 2a 1746. I think you are going to have to search for his true birth date and apply for the Birth Certificate for your Grandfather. This should cost you no more than £7.00 and will give you the names of his father and mother. Can't blame Mum, nor her memory, she wasn't at her dad's birth so can't be absolutely certain. After all, until my eldest D had her 1st I claimed to be 29 and a bit, then when Bronte was born my admitted age shot up to 33 and a bit to keep it legal. So what my grandchildren think about that is anybody's guess. Although to be truthful the bit is now just as big as the 33! Lol

Gwyn - Maggie across the pond did a search that vanished off the screen but she did find some crouchers in Hollingbourn but i think thats near Maidstone so it seemed a bit far away for a Shepherd to travel to work. I have just spoken to mum again. The name was definately Charles and she thinks its Edward. He married someone called Elsie Olive (no maiden name). Their children were born in St Mary's but she isn't sure how long they lived there. Mum thinks her gran might have been Irish originally. She thinks Charles died after 1962 but before 1967 poss at Sellindge? Charring crem is where his ashes are. Elsie died in the early 70's. Mum knows how to get there but not the name of the place. Burried going out of Ashford on the canterbury to faversham rd. Cemetry just over the bypass near a garden centre. Grandad did have a cousin so there must be brothers ans sisters too, Both grandparents are a mystery but we dont even have a maiden name for her. thats about all we know, Thanks for any help. would be lovely to find some relatives. Thank you for your replies. I was up rather late last night on here, so sorry for not getting back sooner. The person we are looking for is my great grandfather. He had 6 children Ralph, len, Lewis (my grandfather), Grace, Hilda and Joyce. Only Hilda is living but i am not in contact with her - although i could try to find out more via Mum. My grandfather was called Lewis Frederick Croucher B 7/11/1921- Died 1991 near Ashford. He had 3 daughters one of which was my Mum. I have found lots and lot of history on my grandmothers side just by meeting people on here so was very lucky but my Mum didn't know her grandparents on the croucher side, she wasn't definite about his name (sorry). It's possible that his wife had the name Olive in it, this was passed down to Mum. Lewis was born at St Mary's in the Marsh according to my Mum, and i understood his parents lived there for a long time and that his father was a Shepherd on Romney Marsh. Everything is based on what i have been told. The only exact dates i have are for Lewis Frederick Croucher. I went to Kent in the summer, but never got to Romney Marsh and now i am very intrigued to know more about it, knowing thats where the other of my Mum's family lived. I visited around Ringwould where Mum was born. She showed me around but we only had one day. I live up in Chester so its hard to get back down. My Dad's side were from Aldington if you know Kent. It's so kind of you to help. Thankyou for any information.

Alison Would it help you if we worked backwards to this chap, the shepherd.? Where do you have his name recorded, ..Is he shown as someone's father on a marriage cert perhaps.....or is he recalled from personal memories. I think the chap born Rye in Carol's list probably died as an infant. Some of the others could be possibles, though. Where did you get the name of the village of St Mary in the Marsh. ? Did your mother visit there? I was crossing Romney Marsh yesterday. ....still lots of sheep there. Gwyn

Hi Can anyone help me please? I want to look up the name Croucher who lived in St Mary in the Marsh, Romney Marsh, Kent. Presumably the census is the quickest route as the family name and place is all i know? (sorry i have only just started and i'm trying to find my way around the records). Possibly a Charles Edward Croucher (great grandfather). I believe he was a shepherd on Romney Marsh! Any Crouchers in this locality would be useful. Thanks Alison x
