Gemma, are you sure of the marriage date of James Butler and Elizabeth Mason in 1916? It's just that he's married to an Elizabeth on the 1891 census and on the 1901 census there's a son, Harry Mason Butler, age 4, which makes it sound as if his wife was Elizabeth Mason. Also there's a marriage on Free BMD in 1889 of a James Buttler and there's an Elizabeth Mason on the same page. Coincidentally, on the 1901 census there's another son named James Morris Butler, age 2. Margaret

I've lost Tom & Susan in 1901 but found their daughter Dora J. Stokes age 19 born Market Hasbro. She's a School Teacher, living as a boarder in Luton, Bedfordshire.

I think Susan Morris Butler married the Stoke not the Cave. However he's Sam Stoke on the census not Tom. Sorry, it's transcribed Sam but looking at the original, it could be Tom. I don't think the family have changed their surname. It's just that names get mistranscribed or that those writing them down did so with whatever spelling they thought to be right. Most ordinary people were illiterate and weren't able to correct any mistakes. Kath. x
