I am looking for John William Batty. He was born abt 1857 probably in Althorpe, Lincs. He married Mary Ann Gray in 1877 in Althorpe. Mary Ann Gray was born in Rawcliffe Yorkshire. I am trying to trace John's parents. I have no idea at this stage who they were. Thanks for your help Jane

Thanks again Kath. This information should be really helpful. I have tried looking them up on the IGI with little success. I have found 2 possible marriages for him. but at this stage I dont know which one is correct. Perhaps there may be a clue on one of the census. Thanks for helping me Jane

Possibly William and parents in 1841? Remembering that ages were rounded down to nearest 5. Althorp, Lincolnshire George Batty, 50, Farmer Mary Batty, 60 William Batty, 25 All born Lincolnshire.

Looks as if Mary has died but I think this is George: 1851 census, Althorpe, Lincolnshire George Batty, head, widower, farmer 8 acres, born Betton, Lincolnshire George Batty, son, 27, single, tailor, born Devythorpe?, Lincolnshire Martha Broadbent, son, 26, single, house servant, born Ferry, Lincolshire. Sure looks like Martha, has been transcribed as Martha but does say son but age is in female column. Margaret

This is the only Mary Batty that looks like she could be the right one in 1851 census. She's a widow living Crowle, which isn't too far from Althorpe. Name: Mary Batty Age: 56 Estimated birth year: abt 1795 Relation: Head Gender: Female Where born: Crowle, Lincolnshire, England Civil parish: Crowle County/Island: Lincolnshire Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Disability: View image Registration district: Thorne Sub-registration district: Epworth ED, institution, or vessel: 1b Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 32 Household Members: Name Age Ann Maria Batty 7 Mary Batty 56 Sarah Batty 32 Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2349; Folio: 434; Page: 7 Kath. x

Ha! Kath found Mary as a widow and I found George as a widower. Back to the old drawing board. Margaret

Looking again at the Mary Batty I found as a widow in 1851, I think she may possibly be too young to be the Mary who was on the 11841 census, so I should disregard that one if I were you. Think you are right Margaret. Why didn't I notice that on the 1861 census, lol. Kath. x

It says Sarah Batty is Mary's daughter and Ann Marie is Mary's grandaughter. Can't tell whether Sarah is Married or Unmarried - the image isn't very clear, but I would suspect unmarried. Ann Marie could be Sarah's or I suppose she could be the duaghter of one of Mary's sons. Not sure. Not even 100% sure this is your Mary from the 1841 census. Kath. x

I think I'm right, George is still alive on the 1861 census living with grandaughter, Mary Batty, age 17. And they're living right next door to William and Elizabeth. Margaret

Thanks Lady's Sarah is Mary and George's daughter so i would think Ann Marie would have to be her daughter. Mary and George had a son called George christened 12 Oct 1822. So that would make the sons age about right on the 1851 so I think this is my family. Please could you tell me who else is living with George and his granddaughter Mary on the 1861 census. Thanks again for all your help Jane

KathleenBell Report 15 Feb 2007 14:51

See Margaret's reply above. George and Grandaughter are not living with anyone else in 1861 but they are next door to William and Elizabeth. Please disregard the Mary living with Sarah and Ann Marie in the 1851 census as they seem to be unconnected to your family. Kath. x
