You need to be open minded about this, family information can be faulty, I had a relation who insisted his father was born in the same house as my grandmother, his sister in Dovercourt, Essex. I had his birth certificate which showed he was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, every census confirmed this and there was no doubt it was the same person. Jennifer

You do not say what her mother's name is on the birth certificate, if it is Annie as in the Census entries you have found, then try this marriage to Annie PERRY. Name: William Catlin Year of Registration: 1887 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Ware County: Hertfordshire Volume: 3a Page: 367 Jennifer

Perhaps the name she gave for her father on her marriage certificate was a step-father (have seen this happen before, if the mother got married again when the child was small, just assumed that the step-father was actually father). Kath. x

KathleenBell Report 4 Mar 2007 15:35

There are these two births at about the right time (in London):- Name: Ethel Catlin Year of Registration: 1898 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Greenwich County: Greater London, Kent, London, Surrey Volume: 1d Page: 1033 and Name: Ethel Catlin Year of Registration: 1900 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Lambeth County: Greater London, London, Surrey Volume: 1d Page: 443 Her age could be out by a couple of years on her marriage certificate (sometimes people lied, especially if they wanted to marry before they were 21 and didn't have parent's consent).
