Hi Reggie - that's what I was attempting to do. His father was James Dixon, Mother Mary Cunningham, marr Jarrow 1909 - his father Thomas and her father William. I was hoping to move back from here but as you already know, am getting nowhere fast !!! He insists his father born Jarrow but it is not on Freebmd so I think I will have to put this on the back-burner for a while and think again. Thanks very much anyway. |

Can't you work backwards? Start with his parent........whichever one was a Dixon, and follow the paper trail............. Reg |

Yes Reggie - he could have died before the census BUT he is not down as deceased on the marr cert. Never mind. Thanks for trying. What a trial this is becoming trying to locate this family. If only the old gentleman knew his grandmothers first name. Ah well.... you can't have everything !! |

Reggie - No I hadn't spotted that one. From the look of the ages of Esther and James in relation to the ages of the parents, it would appear that the sons were born earlier. Oh heck, I had better put my thinking cap on again. The only other 'snippet' is the fact that when James married, he and his wife lived back in his family home for a while and it was supposed 'full of folk'. It was this that made me think that the house was full of James' younger siblings - but perhaps not - there could have been lodgers I suppose. |

Firstly, what documents do you have to support your info that James was born c1889, and that his father was Thomas? Reg |

proceed in order to gain some success. I have been trying to locate a family on both the 1891 and 1901 census. At that time the only information I had was for a James Dixon b. 1889 whose father was Thomas, and that the family hailed from Jarrow. However, no family was found in either census in Jarrow. In the meantime contact has been made with the only surviving offspring of James. This gentleman is now 78 years of age and knew little of his family tree and we thought that the best line of questioning would be to ask him if he remembered any of his Dixon aunts and uncles. He said that his father James (b. 1889) had ten brothers and one sister. Her name was Esther and amongst the other brothers there was a John, Harry (Henry?), Robert, SAmuel and William. With great glee I went back to the drawing board so to speak and again trawled the 1891 and 1901 census hoping to find a father Thomas with sons and a daughter Esther. No luck. I was absolutely floored. It then dawned on me that although Thomas Snr had 10 sons - James being one of them - I had no idea whether James was the first-born, middle or younger son, and the gentleman had no idea who was the oldest etc. etc. I can well understand this as to a child all adult aunts and uncles look pretty much the same. Has anyone any thoughts as to how I can actually track this family down with the scant information at my disposal? I am casting my net further afield and not concentrating my efforts on Jarrow. It could well be that the family were born elsewhere and came to live in Jarrow after 1901. The key seems to be a father Thomas with family of sons, as above, and possibly a daughter. I say possibly as Esther could well have been the youngest after all those boys !!! All I can say now is HELP !!!! |
