I'm trying to trace a number of ancestors who appear to have emigrated from England to Canada (between 1841 - 1850) and would greatly appreciate a passenger list/immigration records look-up to confirm this. The family in question is: John WHITT (b. Feb 1799, Nottingham, England) and his wife Elizabeth (nee ORTON, b. abt 1806, Leicestershire), together with their children Samuel (b. ), Sarah (b. 1831) and Adelaide (b. 1836). They had five other children and perhaps some but not all also travelled with them. I've found the family on the 1841 England census and believe John, the father, died in Ontario in about 1850. So the party must have travelled some time between these dates. Also, subsequent marriage and death records for the children mentioned above, indicate they settled mainly in Ontario. Any help very gratefully received! Thanks in advance. Simon |

Simon, is John Henry Whitt, born 3 Oct.1882, Nottingham one of yours? He enlisted in the Canadian army in 1918, giving his address as Pennsylvania but next-of-kin, his wife Harriet in Nottingham. Margaret |

On the Ellis Island site there's a John H. Whitt arriving in New York aboard the Lusitania, Oct. 4, 1912. His occupation is machinist and he's heading for Pawtuckett, Rhode Island. His father is Mr. Whitt, 11a Baldwin St., Nottingham. Then on the collectionscanada site there's John Henry Whitt. He's also a machinist, his next-of-kin is wife Harriet of Baldwin St., Nottingham but he gives his own address as Pennsylvania. He enlisted Sept. 1918. ( a nice safe time to do so) Then he's back on the Ellis Island site, arriving Oct. 17, 1919 abord the Adriatic. He gives name of nearest relative as his wife Mrs. Whitt of 31 Baldwin St., Radford, Nottingham. he's heading for Chester, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Curious! |

Simon, the 1911 Canadian census has Samuel Whitt, age 81, living in home of son-in-law Robert C. McLeay and wife Nellie S. It says that Samuel was born Jan.1830 in England and emigrated 1839. Margaret |

Many thanks Margaret - the dates/names from the 1901 and 1911 Canadian census tally with what I have. If you are able to email the relevant pages, I'd be enormously grateful. Email address is [email protected]. Simon |

Ginny, I don't have access to passenger lists but I checked the 1901 and 1911 Canadian census for your Aaron and don't see him. Mind you, if he was in Quebec, he could be badly mis-transcribed. You haven't seen anything until you've seen a transcription done in Quebec by a French speaking census taker doing an English speaking family! Margaret |

Margaret. I know that Aaron died in 1902 in a mining disaster - I am trying to find out details of his emigration. |
