Find Ancestors

I wonder if anyone can give me information i need to find out how i go about finding out a mother or fathers name when i have tried to get a birth certificate it needs this information so i dont know how i can get these names the parents i need to find are for herbert anthony riggall he was born in 1922 and died in 1971 he was born in march i know his mothers maiden name from the birth records is parker but know nothing else how do i find out if i can help would be appreciated thanks

If you are ordering from the GRO, you don't need parent's names. You just need the GRO reference Name Year and quarter District Volume number Page number. If you have all of this from the index you don't need anything else. Make sure that when the form asks 'Is the Full GRO Reference Known?' that you tick the 'yes' box. If you leave it on 'no' they will charge you more. It should be £7. Kath. x

Herbert Riggall born march quarter 1922 in Oldham MMN Parker ref no:8d-1074. If you order the certificate from the GRO tick the box which asks if you have the full Gro reference number which is 8d-1074, fill in the other details they ask for & then you wont need the parents names. Georgina.

Wendy, Herbert's parents names were Herbert Riggall & Catherine Parker & they married in Oldham in the june quarter 1919 ref no:8d-1554. Georgina.

hi thanks for your replys 1st can i ask you what the gro is please so i can use it and how did you find out the names georgina thats brill them two are bound to be on a census do u think how would i find there date of birth or a rough guide to it

Wendy when every Birth, Marriage or Death is recorded it is entered in a large book, the book Herbert's birth was recorded in was Volume 8d and the entry was on page 1074 and these are the GRO reference numbers. I trawled through the full marriage indexes on Ancestry until I found a marriage between a Parker & Riggall (luckily Riggall is not a common name). Georgina.

thanks as u can tell i am not as well up on these things if they are not straight forward my family side was no problem this is my hubbys side and he doesnt know anything about his grandparents so i would love to find out more how would i find out herbert riggall and catherine parkers date of birth and if they are on the 1901 census i guessed and did a census check but dont know if its right i am really gratefull for this help

Wendy if I was you I would order their marriage certificate which should give you their ages and as I said before their fathers names & occupations, that would help narrow down your search for the families on the 1901 census. georgina what are the reference numbers for the marrage i am doing it now is it june 1919 for herbert and catherine and is the ref 8d-1554 or 8d 1074 as u have them two on different messages also could you find the reference if poss for his dads marrage certificate he was herbert anthony riggall married rose mary curran think it was feb maybe 1949 or within 4years give or take thanks
